Yeah you’re right, Dunn. De La Hoya definitely had a complicated relationship with the Mexican/Chicano audience. I remember even my parents (trad Mexicans) saying he was more “gringo.” The Chavez fights for sure added fuel to that fire then you also had the final rounds against Tito and the whole Vargas fight bring back the subject. I remember Mexicans used to hate on him for fighting like a “negro” (term used for African Americans but not used as a degrading word) because he had a refined boxing style with footwork.

Mayweather had haters everyone but you’d be shocked at how many Mexicans/Chicanos love him. That was my favorite fighter and many of my friends’ as well. A lot of old school Mexican guys would not be a fan but would always make comments to admire his skills. For some reason when Mayweather donned the colors against De La Hoya I never saw it as in insulting, then again I did just state my bias towards him. I also liked when Tyson Fury did with the luchador mask, that was more creative and fun.

And like I said, I don’t mind the antics against us but would be nice to see fighters poke at other nationalities and ethnicities.
