Well, I don’t think it fundamentally changes the sport much. If anything, it’s just an adjustment to the pacing. You would probably get more slower rds than you would fast paced rounds.

If we’re going to make rounds longer, I think the next step would be to have a discussion about making the number of rounds less. 5 min rds for 9 rds would equal 3 min rds for 15 rds. I can’t see even the supreme boxers doing more than 10 of those rds. And I don’t think anyone would want to sit through that long of a bout, unless it’s high action and between top billed boxers.

Do you want to go the UFC route and do 5 rounds for championship bouts, and 3 rounds for everyone else?

I like the idea of experimenting with rd lengths and number of rds. Where did the 3 min rule come from anyways? Shorter length of rds I think would encourage more offense. You have less time to prove that you won the round. Would be more of a sprint. I think for boxing, a longer rd would equal a slower pace, but maybe not if we are decreasing the number of rds as a result.

You already see the difference between 2 and 3 minute rounds. The women throw like they're training on the heavy bag. The chess match element goes out of the window.

At 5 minute rounds you would see far less exchanging. It would be a tactical affair. It would definitely favour the more technical fighters.

      But 3 minutes is perfect.

        You think so

But they have more tools to work with. They're not just working a jab, they're checking kicks and take downs

I believe I just recently watched something about Floyd Mayweather Jr. and he spar(ed) 5min rds.

                  I could see this

head trauma is worse in boxinf

shorter rounds gives the corner and ref more chances to care for the fighter

Fights would end earlier probably. Wilder got knocked down in the third in that last Fury fight with about 10 seconds remaining, then Fury got knocked down in the next round with about 30 seconds remaining. If they had to survive almost the length of another round after being hurt the fight probably ends there.
