This fight would happen only if Makabu agreed to take a dive like Kovalev did. Makabu is a mediocre fighter. He was KO'd by Tony Bellew and would be KO'd by the top cruisers so it is a no brainer to sell the belt while he can for 10 mil. Clenelo does not have heavy hands even for a 154 fighter. He needs weaklings or crooked fights at these heavier weights.

I don't like this fight for Canelo, don't get me wrong I think he's the best fighter in the world right now, but hes always had a few major complaints against his career management.

      1) he calls out and fights big names after they are old to further his resume (Mosley, Cotto, Mayweather, GGG x2, Kovalev). 2) He sets up fights at awkward catch weights or weights his opponents traditionally don't fight at (his MW title run, the whole Caneloweight). 3) He picks out low hanging fruit to grab belts from the weakest champion at higher weights.

If the rumors about the WBC dropping the CW limit back to 190 are true, then this fulfils two of the three. Even if not, to jump over some more worthy challengers in Lt Heavy just looks bad, at least to the boxing community as a whole.

You do realize the wbc announced possibly lowering the CW limit to 190 waaaay before Canelo thought about fighting there **** it was before BJS fight.

Also stop it with the excuses if Kova was “washed up” then Porter is washed up too and Bud should get zero credit since Porter is only months shy of how old Kova was when Canelo beat him.

If he decides to go ahead with this, IMO it's a mistake on his part, let me explain. Regardless, win, lose, or draw against Makubu, unless Canelo plans to stay at Cruiserweight, or Campaign at 175, this will be a mistake, simply because to add muscle mass to your body, and then try to cut that mass if he decides to go back to 168, will take it's toll and will affect him and his conditioning, I believe it will weaken him if he decided to go back down and cut that muscle after he puts it on for this challenge. You simply can not have those weight fluctuations in boxing, no matter how good you are this will affect you, IDK if Canelo and Reynoso have taken this into account, but they should and might be ruining the future, for this shot. IDK maybe I'm wrong and he can handle it, but if he does it, I personally would not fight under 175 for future fights, I think 168 after this would be a mistake.
Yes, I think you're right. Canelo might even be using this fight to allow himself time to acclimate to a heavier fighting weight and opponent with a view to a title campaign at 175. Similar to what he did going from 160 to 175 then back to 168?

Im not questioning the WBCs timetable for dropping the CW limit to 190, but as I stated initially he is fighting an opponent at a weight they are not accustomed to (Makabu has not fought under 190 in over a decade).

Nor did I use the phrase "washed up" (which you put in quotations while quoting me, and is a false attribution as such), I said he was old, which he was for a fighter. Moreover, your math is bad in the Porter comparison, or you are being intentionally disingenuous with your use of the phrase "months shy". Kovalev was 36 and a half years old when he fought Alvarez, Porter will be less than a month past his 34th birthday tomorrow. Thats a two and a half years difference, I think most would agree thats more than just "months shy".

Once again, this isnt to disparage Canelo as a great fighter, I think he is clearly the best P4P fighter in the world right now. But he has in the past picked off some names and trinkets that look better as names on his resume than they were at the time of the fight. Its nothing new, plenty of great fighter have done it. But if we are going to be honest and fair in our assessment we can't turn a blind eye to it.
