Comments Thread For: Canelo Alvarez: As High As He Gets?

By Cliff Rold - Right now, it looks like a before and after. Saul Alvarez was already one of the better fighters in the world before his second bout with Gennady Golovkin. Their rematch, like the first fight, was hotly contested and the scoring continues to be debated but there was something different about Alvarez's performance that night.

I'm not quite sure if I like the phenomenon of a fighting 'lottery'. Before Canelo it was Mayweather, before that Tyson, and so on.

Does it devalue the already 1000 different rubbish belts we have? Does it encourage the best to fight the best?

I don't think so. There are too many fights to list that should've, could've, would've.

fighters hanging on to one belt until they reach their mid 30's then cash out. Like Bivol.

Can't really blame the fighters as that's the system they live and breathe in. Can't blame the promoters, Can't blame the sanctioning bodies, who is to blame?

Do we go right back to whoever invented market capitalism and consumerism? Right back to the Medici's and the Borgia's? Milton Friedman, Ronald 'let the bull run free' Reagan?

    Adam Smith?

All I know is the system that governs boxing is corrupt to its core. and that's a fact.

Cash out fight is for bums. The greats fight everyone. ODLH Tito Trinidad Sergio Martinez Miguel cotto the list goes on all fighters that forged their own way took losses and still made many many millions. This cash out phenomenon is reserved for fighters who feel like they are owed something. Like golovkin. And BJS. Fighters who have never beat anyone good or fought anyone their whole careers then sit around for 5+ years refusing to fight anyone with a pulse except the top draw in the sport. The blame goes to anyone willing to pay for it. These fights are only worth as much as people will pay to see them if they want to see the best fight the best they need to stop paying top dollar for anything less

What a great quote by Nietzsche. As a nonconformist I totally agree with his observation.

It's as high as he gets without Beterbiev if he fights him soon. That's the one fight that would elevate my opinion of Canelo further.

It's a real shame that there isn't more quality fighters at 168/175. They're weak divisions. I almost feel like it's been too easy for Canelo since moving up. But you can only beat what's available and he's done that well.

Any quote from Nietzsche is relevant. "Whoever fights monsters should be mindful that he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

Canelo should challenge himself and stop fighting cherries or has beens. Stop fighting these soft smith brother (there are like 2 more of them) and turkish fisherman.

Grow balls and fight Beterbiev or Bivol, Charlo ,Andrade for recognition.

And with all due respect to Plant he is a cherry as well, who has he really beat in this week divison?

                  Cherries!

When are Beterbiev, Bivol, Charlo, and Andrade going to grow balls?

Why hasn't the 175 lbs division been unified yet? Why hasn't Charlo fought Benavidez or Andrade?

Canelo has to do everything while they all just sit back doing nothing.
