""Tony Russo, another GOP loyalist, was the $77,000-a-year seldom-show executive director of the NYSAC. He was quietly eased out after we exposed how he botched the weigh-in for the Arturo Gatti-Joey Gamache fight at Madison Square Garden in February 2000. Russo supervised that weigh-in and allowed Gatti to jump off the scale after the balance beam indicated that Gatti was clearly over the contracted weight.

Gamache's trainer, Jimmy Glenn, immediately protested that Gatti was "over the weight," and asked that he get back on the scale. But Russo, who was there to insure competitive fairness, told Glenn, "Shut up! Stop making a fuss!" "

"Such a size disparity, over two weight classifications, is not permitted under the rules. Gatti knocked Gamache out cold in two rounds. Gamache spent two nights in the hospital and hasn't boxed since, on the advice of his doctors.

"They send us out to slaughter, and there is no one to protect us," Gamache told me.
The above is from Jack Newfield, one of the most respected boxing analysts probably ever.

Once or twice, okay, 10 times, no, that's ****ing wrong and downright immoral. He's putting those other fighters at risk doing that ****. And you can say well they willingly get in that ring too. Yes, but they get in thinking they're fighting a guy of the same weight, not 20 lbs heavier.
actually this tactic is a very common practice for alot of fighters who are fighting at lighter weights. before weigh-in, they would limit their food intake, thus lowering their weight. but after that, they'll eat like lions. you'll see the difference during fight night.

      im a gatti fan, though

Mayweather still needs a big fight at 140Lb, fighting Brussels world ranking 40, Corley world rank 30 isn't proving your self at this weight. If he doesn't take this fight who will he fight Zoo is fighting Hatton, Cotto's people wont put him in with Mayweather yet, and i can't see mayweather fighting Harris or Witter. I think Mayweather needs to take this fight, if he doesn't and fights someone outside the top 10 he will be proving nothing.

Yeah I know fighters blow up huge after the weigh in, but not usually before the weigh in. Gatti cheats man. Can't you see that? He doesn't even actually make weight all the time yet he still fights, meaning he gets to say 145 for a 140 weigh in and then balloons up 15 lbs in a day so he comes in at 160 at the night of the fight. it is unethical at that point, not simply tactical.

witter, I want Mayweather to fight Gatti but Floyd shouldn't have to take **** money when the fight wasn't actually ever postponed. Arum is bull****ting, he's playing **** around games and Gatti is just trying to use that legal **** of Mayweather's as a red herring for the truth, which is Gatti doesn't want Mayweather because fighting Mayweather means a definite loss. A loss for Gatti pretty much spells his career's demise. He's gotta hold onto that title, which remember, he never actually beat Tszyu for, until the bitter end.

He says he can't fight Mayweather in Jan. because he needs a tune up, taking a huge layoff since he had just a 2 round blow out against Dorin. Then he says he can't wait forever to fight Mayweather even though the fight would still happen June 11? Come on, it is a bull**** smoke screen by Gatti, not Mayweather.

I'm not so easily deceived by that bs. Can't you see through it? It is pretty easy to see through. Look at the big picture. Obviously Mayweather tears Gatti apart. So it is a big fight for Mayweather because Gatti is somewhat of a big name. Yeah Mayweather has no other big names to fight right now, but neither does Gatti. So why should Mayweather have to take a million dollar pay cut? So since Mayweather refuses to be a sucker, of course Gatti'll try getting his people to spin it where Mayweather's the one doing the ducking. Spinks' team tried the same **** with Judah. I just wish Floyd would do what Zab did and say **** the money, I'll get paid next time.

I think he is talking about recent times - people have been complaining in the last 6-12 months PBF hasnt fought any big people. Just an observation.

Being undefeated doesnt mean you have stepped up the competition - if anything, you should keep fighting and searching for the best until you lose. That is of course in a perfect sport. But this is nitpicking and kind of OT.

I'm sad to see this fight not happen too - I have only got into boxing in the last year and havent even seen much of PBF - heard alot from his fans tho

Okay you definitely are out of your element if you haven't even seen Mayweather much, damn. That **** is just insulting.

Okay you want to look at recent ****? Fine. Leonard Dorin, Branco, Leija, Mickey Ward. That is Gatti's ****ing recent people. Every single one of them bums.

Mayweather's recent guys...Corley, Bruseles, NDou, Castillo. Bruseles and N'Dou I'll give you, bums. But Corley and Castillo are decent bums. Regardless of weight class, most of Mayweather's recent opponents, if not all, would beat all of Gatti's opponents. Corley and Castillo definitely beat Ward, Leija, Dorin, and Branco. Only one Bruseles might not beat is Leija, maybe. N'dou...I don't know enough about, he's about the same level as all the Gatti opponents. He was a tune up.

Damn, it's gettin' deep in here. RESPECT ... SHOW SOME ****ING RESPECT, MAN!!! There are definitely conflicting reports about who punked out of the fight. Whoever it is, it really sucks. I wouldn't trust Bob Arum as far as I can spit. Isn't he one of the cats being indicted for fixing fights? The fans want to see this fight. What would Floyd get? 2 1/2 mil instead of 3 1/2 mil? Something like that? That sure ain't chump change. Get it on Floyd! Get it on Arturo! Fix it Bob!

Its more of a respect thing than money now. It is a slap in the face of Floyd for him to have to take a $1 million cut in pay. It is just another one of Arum's games where he tries ****ing with Mayweather. He has mispromoted Floyd on purpose and **** if I know why, besides the fact that Arum only likes mexicans. Seriously, go to TopRank.com and tell me I'm wrong.
