It's very hard to compare old-school and modern day fighters.

Old-school fighters fight almost every week even if they have to fight bums with 20+ losses. While fighters of today fight 3-5 times a year and even if they win big fights they get discredited because the other guy is weight-drained, distracted, plasters and stuffs like that. @_@

Its debateable who the better fighters are (don't forget Young Corbett III), but its hard to arguue the competition of the time.

I think because theres so many morons who know nothing about past fighters, smart guys like you overcompensate a little and maybe give the old guys a little more credit than they deserve. I get the point you were trying to make with this thread though.

      Maybe. Ignorance drives me crazy.

Fact is Conn and Manny are both great, great fighters and they are close in historical standing, but I think Manny is a slightly better fighter.
Again this is arguable but I don't really have a problem with it if you can discuss the facts.

and even years later Holmes was able to get a win over Mercer and give Holyfield a surprisingly tough fight, even at 40+. not too shabby a win, if you ask me.

Spinks had an annoying herky jerky style, but it was still very effective. able to get him wins over Marvin Johnson, Dwight Qawi, Yanqui Lopez, and Eddie Muhammed, alongside other rated fighters at the time.
        Quick question.

How come Spinks never fought Saad Muhammad? I know their title reigns only overlapped for a short time, but is there a specific reason? I've tried to look for a legit reason, but only found a youtube video in which Saad Muhammad says he believes Spinks ducked him.

It just seems kinda strange (to me), that they didn't fight, when both fought Lopez, Qawi, Johnson, and Eddie M. Muhammad.

I liked Matthew Saad Muhammed but quite honestly, Spinks would beat that ass bad.

                Watch Conn versus Joe Louis.

I know there is vid of that bro.

You wouldn't believe how well Conn fought.

If not the whole fight, there is certainly some good footage.

I'm not debating that; I agree with you (especially the MSM that tried fighting on after Qawi).

I just found it a bit odd.

i dont give a damn what pac, floyd, or billy con rank. Im 28 years old, half black/ half white. Started watching boxing in the mid to late 80s with my pops.

I hate floyd, im a big fan of pacquiao, & my favorite fighter of all time is a mexican, salvador sanchez.

Im no pachugger blinded by nationalistic pride or a floyd lover overwhelming with black power.

I do hate the hypocrisy of old fighters & historians vs modern fighters.

How can I take old school boxers seriously when they fight guys with 20 to 30 losses on their records? How am i suppose to feel about a boxer who losses to guys with 2-6 records & gets tko'd by a guy who is 1-1?

We have never seen films of these guys yet you bust my balls for looking up their records & throwing out stats?

Lets be ****ing real here brah.
How can you be taken seriously when its obvious you have only used the numbers provided by boxrec as your research? If you want to discredit somebody at least present all the facts. It like you talking about those losses Conn had. When in his career did they happen? Was he injured? Had he eaten that day? When was his last fight? How many amature fights did he have before turning pro? You leave out so much but expect to have your word taken as gospel. Do some research and than come back and argue. Don't just bring that "How can I take a guy serious with losses to guys with such and such a record" crap.
