  • Comments Thread For: Hearn: Joshua Will Have To Make Fundamental Changes, Do A lot More To Beat Usyk

Eddie Hearn, promoter for Anthony Joshua, says his boxer will need to do a lot more in order to overcome Oleksandr Usyk in the rematch. On Saturday night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Usyk impressively outboxed Joshua over twelve rounds to capture the WBO, IBF, IBO, WBA heavyweight titles.

Usyk has Joshua's number, he'll beat him 9 out of 10 times

AJ suffers from 'deer-in-the-headlight' syndrome when under attack. He has improved a bit and we saw that last night. Under Usyk's attack late in the 12th, very few punches of Usyk's landed after the first 2/3 which caused Joshua to back to the ropes. Once on the ropes he ducked and dodged nearly all the incoming punches.

BUT - that's not enough. He has to
a/ move his head more when in his boxing stance
        b/ block more punches
c/ learn not to leap backwards every time the opponent throws or feints to throw. If you leap backwards you're never in a good position to counter.
d/ learn to be calmer under duress.

Do all that in 6 months? Very difficult but he'd need to either change and/or add to his coaching team.

He has made a boatload of money, he is a good fighter who was perceived as great and finally been exposed. He is very vulnerable and any very good fighter will probably beat him. For somebody who has been boxing a while, he sometimes seem like a novice in that ring and his stamina is just awful. The gravy train looks about to crash for him. Fighting Usyk again am not sure is a good idea cos Usyk will get better, get bigger and he's still the better fighter and knowing what he knows now, he might up the pressure earlier this time. Joshua's chance will be to go for broke early but if Usyk survives it, it will be a long night for him.

Fundamental changes, like a 16 foot ring?

I am sorry, but the first thing he will have to do is change Rob Mcraken and move out of his comfort zone. For Usyk, I still think Joshua is the bigger guy who should have won and will probably win in the rematch. He will do what he was supposed to do in this fight and that is to control the distance by using the jab more effectively and control the movement by being more mobile with his feet.

However, it would be a shallow victory since Joshua is there to be exposed again by a bigger man (Fury, Wilder, Joyce, Dubois, etc.). To up his game and get that killer instinct, he should probably get a Mexican trainer and possibly move to the US or Mexico for extended training. Someone that can make him fight like the bigger man he is and fight with authority not fearing the other guy. He needs to get out of his comfort zone and start fighting for survival against rough and tough guys. I doubt he would do the latter as he has enough money to start thinking about retiring and enjoying life. He would make a few more million even which fading into the sunset so I doubt if this loss will rekindle his hunger and will to go through a hard training camp.

you can't fix punch resistance, and if Joshua continues he'll become HW Khan. Everyone saw he gets wobbled every fight, only it took Ruiz to totally expose it. The funny thing is, during his after fight interview in the ring, Usyk revealed that his coaches told him not to go for the KO, so even when Uysk wasn't throwing bombs, it still hurt Joshua enough to keep Joshua fearful. And Usyk isn't a heavy hitter to begin with, that's how bad Joshua's punch resistance is. Yeah it might be in the realm of pseudoscience, but Joshua's head shape (long and thin, similar to Khan's) isn't built to take shots. Compared to giant Olmec heads like James Toney lol
