The 2nd most overrated boxer in history apart from Wilder. This guy allegedly was past his prime by age 24.
The guy just crumbled as he started facing real competition. He was classic gym boxer - all flash but no real bite against formidable opponents.
Frazier was another yank HW. Apart from beating Ali - he was **** average.Comment

I agree he’s very overrated as a fighter. Still I’ll also say that being overrated means that you captured some sort of love from the fans for whatever reason. It’s still prize fighting. It’s about what people are willing to pay to see you fight. His jab and head movement is more myth than reality. He mostly just cycled through his combos. He’d slam into his opponents, mostly with a 1-2 ( especially later ) and rely on the ref to split them up to give him distance to try again. He’d constantly look to the ref. He wasent a dirty dirty fighter except for a few instances. His right to the body, right uppercut was his best combo. Still he’d just keep throwing it until it landed. He landed it clean vs Holy but Holy didn’t go anywhere. I love the drama and potential Mike brought to the ring. Still all in all at the highest level he underperformed compared to the masses expected. He stood in there vs Lewis until he really couldn’t continue, respect. He always had a pretty good chin. The 2nd most overrated boxer in history apart from Wilder. This guy allegedly was past his prime by age 24.

The man that ducked Floyd Patterson, Ken Norton and Ron Lyle. What great boxer did he beat apart from the lone victory against Ali? Got beat by Ali and Foreman twice.
Did he even fight Jimmy Young?
Floyd Patterson, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young were in his era. But somehow he never fought them. And you think he’s not overrated?Comment

He was a celebrity boxer and media creation during an era when boxing needed a superstar. And his fantastic gym exploits, looks, style and story were a good sell.

But in the ring, he was grossly overrated. People still make all kinds of excuses for him for wetting the bed in big fights against formidable opponents. And that’s what makes him overrated.Comment

You said it. I had the video game, rented his greatest hits multiple times. The day after he beat Spinks ( sorry if everyone is sick of this story )I asked my dad ( a true unbiased boxing fan ) if there’s anyone out there that could beat Mike Tyson? He told me that a guy named “Evander Holyfield” will one day. He would only take even odds bets when they finally fought. Didn’t want to ruin anyone’s night.
