Bums are club fighters. Guys with many losses, who are there to make journeymen and gatekeepers looking good.

Yet most of the fighters I questioned match your description of a bum

On a personal note no he wouldn't be a bum, but in the eyes of American boxing public he'd be a bum or a gatekeeper. He loses this fight and the only reason PBC keeps him is to make some younger prospect look good. Otherwise they'll stall before giving him his next fight to avoid to pay him and avoid losing money during his fights. The man isn't popular and this was before making it to the dance and now he certainly isn't popular enough to put against say Wallin, Whyte or Ruiz and expect to the event to be profitable. So for Deontay and the reason he asked for an immediate rematch is this is it. He wins and escapes the wheels of the boxing business ready to crush the remains or he loses and becomes another body fed to the wheel of boxing's business the same reason Broner will never make what he made before his loss to Maidana.

I don't think he'll be considered a bum, but he definitely won't be thought of in high regard. I'd be surprised if, in 20 years time, he's ranked within the top 30 of heavyweight champions. Five-year reign, ten title defences, and only two decent opponents across (currently) four fights...in which (win or lose) he was terribly exposed in all of them.

Wilder's entire legacy will be limited to two aspects..."he had a big right hand" and "remember that time he got spanked by Fury and made a laundry list of embarrassingly hilarious excuses".

How many other bums were a world champion for 5+ years?

I wouldn’t say a bum but we’ll look at his title run differently. He feasted on bigger slower guys that he could load up on without worrying about having to move and use footwork.
Fury is just all wrong for him. A bigger guy that can use angles to cut off the ring and fight inside to take away Wilder’s range. I don’t think changing trainers and a year plus layoff is a recipe to overcome that.

Lame argument. On that analogy then it would make Fury a bum if he he loses to Wilder. Fury has his number and if Wilder doesn't land that right which is pretty much all he has I don't see how Wilder can win.
