Maybe. But maybe this is something that took a life of its own without anyone actually verifying whether that was indeed the situation. And the reason why I say this is due to it’s not being the first time something like this happened.

Wonjongkam eventually set the flyweight division record for consecutive title defenses, without ever fighting against interim champion Arce.”

How is this possible? Because the WBC interim belt unification with the regular belt was always voluntary. You have to petition the WBC, and they have to approve it. It had always been set up that way, which is ridiculous. But those have been the rules.

So I have no idea why these journalists are saying to was a mandatory when even back then it was a voluntary.

The way Haney was screwed over was because he was supposed to fight Luke Campbell instead of Loma. That’s possible. But Haney IS with DAZN. After the Crolla problem of Hearn forcing the fight into a purse bid and racking up the cost of the fight, Arum wasn’t going to let that happen again. It also would have prolonged everything. Arum had made promises to Loma to be on the fast track. While Haney and Campbell would have fought, Loma would have had to fight someone else, and then it would have screwed up the sequence of events with Teofimo and the IBF. Thats really all that’s there. No ducking here. Just business, politics and rules.

Also, it is worth noting that Team Haney never petitioned to fight Loma. Maybe they didn't now that's what they had to do, but Mauricio did explain to them that that's what was required. Team Haney petitioned to fight the Dominican boxer instead.
