An old boxer knocked out a former UFC heavyweight champion in an MMA match. So it seems good hand skills are the technique that carries over the most between the two sports.Comment

JCC Jr is still a clown for losing that fight but that was the exception, not the rule, just like Ray Mercer knocking out Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds in MMA.Comment

They always look awkward in the ring with boxers, they dont line up on the same plane. Connor was constantly ending up behind floyd because they like to circle so much. Woodley did a better job as far as trying to fight in a line like a boxer but his footwork was pretty wack, he looked like a crab walking when he was bent down all low. Jake is so much worse than we thought, his punches telegraphed, gasses just like his brother, power is gone after two rounds ect.Comment

To be fair, Silva had 2 pro boxing matches prior to that fight and he trained nothing but boxing for over two years after he recovered from his gruesome leg break because he didn't want to spar kickboxing or grappling on the leg.

silva really shocked me how he performed with Jr. He looked like an actual boxer, he was actually outboxing Jr which blew my mind. Now I know Jr is the king of dissapointment so of course he woudl be the guy to get schooled by a 46 year old MMA fighter but silva still had to be highly skilled to do that.
I didnt know that he had 2 years of pure boxing training so that must be what really helped him break MMA habits.Comment

I said it in another thread earlier - MMA fighters lose 100% of the time (okay ignoring JCC jr) in boxing if they fight someone who is at a comparable level in boxing that they are in MMA. While boxers will generally lose quicker and look worse in MMA than the MMA guys in boxing, but maybe 1 time out of 10 they will land something early and get the upset. Thats how you end up with Mercer KO'ing a former UFC champion but also getting stopped in the first round by a D level MMA fighter. Its harder to get upsets in boxing because of the bigger gloves, much narrower skill focus, counts after the knockdown etc.Comment
