I think its easy too think Spence hits harder (he does but again Ugas has deceptive power imho), he does this better and that but I said do not be surprised if Ugas is a tougher fight because he is from the Cuban system he is used to seeing southpaws week in, week out.
Spences overall track record vs southpaws is a bit hit and miss.
I think Spences aggression and not being as defensively responsible as Ugas who takes that half step back *might* play more into Mannys hands. It would have certainly gave him more chances.
I don't want Ugas to go from the most underrated in boxing to the most overrated in a heartbeat.
A lot of credit needs to go to his team & trainer Ismael Salas also.
A lot of times when fighters fight Manny they look flustered very early in the first, that handspeed and explosiveness you can see wtf? etched on their faces, you can see the panic in their reactions but he came out super composed and established his gameplan immediately. He didn't look like he had any nerves whatsoever, that is experience.
You can't or its hard too jab vs a southpaw, they said. I don't think so I think trainers aren't teachers these days they're social media wh0res and glorified fitness instructors for most part and fighters think they can replace fundamentals with s&c work. Its the weigh-ins, fighters cutting grotesque amount of weights so others are spending too much time being copycats and training like a crossfitter rather than a boxer. Salas, that is a proper boxing trainer, a teacher one of few left around.
I'm thinking back to the Brook fight as he's the more fundamentally sound and not to dissimilar to Ugas and I am trying too think back to a time anyone has gone to Spences body, I can't.
We know Ugas has good fundamentals but I think we don't pay enough attention to his defence. Brooks defence was always more offensive based, keeping you on the end of his jab, quite good reflexes but Ugas poses different looks he has all that but has a variety of guards and while he doesn't have fast feet he has educated feet. Always in a good position.
Subtle, small movements and great eyes. He takes that little half step back and makes you fall short and Spence does overextend himself quite a lot.
Its one of those fights I struggle to envision a little.
I think like a good 99% would pick Spence and I'd be in that 99% but why would we be picking Spence?
I think Ugas does better vs southpaws than Spence does vs fundamentally sound fighters like Ugas. Ugas has the style to blunt offensive high out-put fighters without stinking out the place like a Rigo.
Again I think just about everyone picks Spence - I don't think Ugas stops him and I don't think he can get a decision but in a fair world I'm not sure if I could tell you why I'd favour Spence. That isn't to say I would favour Ugas its me questioning why I would or do favour Spence.
I don't think he has looked all that in his last few fights, he is certainly not the puncher I originally thought he was then you add the injury, inactivity. Why do I favour him? Ugas is hot right now he has the momentum, the experience, maybe the better fundamentals and maybe the style.
This is how boxing should be though, right? You being uncertain on fights. Changing your picks. Having fights do your head in so much you start studying footage etc to try fathom a winner. This is what I miss about boxing.
