Why postponement is not a viable option.
Why 40 million for a replacement is fair.
look at the entire picture and realize why this fight really fell apart.
- If plants get injured and the fight get postponed than the 40 million dollar purse is to low of an offer. Canelo fights 3 times in a 6 months period with an logical assumption of 2 regular fights at a 15 million guarantee and a big fight at a 30 million dollar guarantee + his sponsorship, gate and all of Latin America TV right's Canelo is ball-parked to earn about 90 million in these 6 months. Now if he has to wait around beholden to a PBC contract over a injury postponement he is losing 6 months worth of earning potential which as I just explained is roughly valued at 90 million.
Why 40 million for a replacement is fair.
- Canelo conceded to PBC/Haymon to come to their network to make the fight happen on the basis that he fights on his date which is Mexican Independence day (September 15 weekend). So if plant cant fight on that date due to injury/sickness than the show must go on as to Canelo stipulation that he must fight on that date. To fulfill this stipulation you must supply a replacement and the 40 million price tag remains because you are paying for the superstar Canelo to leave his preferred network (Dazn) and possibly lose some favor over this choice to come to your network where you are able to re-negotiate sponsorship, money, network options etc all because of Canelo involvement. Also because the alternative is you can let Plant go to Dazn where they will foot the bill for the purse of the fighters and take you off the hook from this money commitment and replacement commitment. You send plant over and if he gets injured the fight is off and Canelo show goes on at Dazn and they will supply him with the replacement and pay his fee and you are off the hook. However they WANT Canelo on their network this is why they are and should pay that premium.
- Also why $40 million for a replacement clause is important to keep in place is to encourage no funny business and that everything goes as promised. Its akin to fighters putting expensive "penalty" for being overweight, they do it to make sure the fighter comes in on weight and does not try to "take advantage". Canelo is using the $40 million dollar price tag for replacements in this way aswell. He is making sure that the "penalty" (40 million) is to harsh for PBC to try and "take advantage" (miss weight or in this case plant getting "Hurt/Sick" to post pone the fight). PBC knows Canelo is dead set to fight on September 18, without the clause aka "penalty" to ensure no funny business Caleb Plant can essentially get "Hurt/Sick" the week of the fight and get his postponement and PBC can substitute a replacement for Canelo to fight on the 18th which will essentially turn a 1 fight deal into a 2 fight deal. This clause is a penalty to make sure they dont do that and encourages that everything goes to plan.
- You cannot ask a fighter to forfeit a paycheck if the original fight cant be had. If plant gets injured/sick and the fight is called off Canelo is robbed of the opportunity to capitalize on his fight date and self promotion this is why replacement opponents are factored in (think Ruiz replacement over Miller) alot of money, time and effort goes into making a fight and you can not expect them to treat this as if its spilled milk and lost out on the time and potential $.

- Caleb Plant have already finalized and signed off on his portion of the contract weeks ago, this is a dispute between PBC (Haymon) and Canelo. Haymon has PBC interest above any one fighter so when he negotiates its for the betterment of his outfit "PBC" rather than the fighter (Caleb Plant). Please understand that. If Haymon was only just Caleb Plant's manager/advisor the fight would have been made already, accept Canelo/Dazn/Matchroom deal and fight over at Dazn for the one off and make your career high payday. However Haymon isn't just only the manager but also is more importantly the owner of the PBC "entity" and this entity's betterment takes priority over the fighter. Its the reason Caleb Plant cant go over and fight at Dazn, its the reason for the high guarantee to get Canelo to come to PBC (so PBC can benefit through the residual effects of Canelo's brand featured in your outfit). This is one main reason the Ali act exist to prevent these conflict of interest from exploiting the fighter for the "manger's/promoter's" gain.
- Mind you in real PPV non covid times a fighter will just fight on if sick so this issue wasn't really an issue, just now in covid times you cannot just 'fight on' if you have covid the fight must be cancelled or postpone. Canelo's main and hard stipulation prior to even opening up negations was that he MUST fight on September 18th... so this is not new or a last minute request this is letting the other party know what is your hard terms so that both parties can decide if they can come to a deal or not its called "negotiating in good faith". This stipulation is something PBC knew about from the start but wanted to strategically omit it till the closing of negations as a strong-arm tactic to force Canelo's hand into accepting the deal as they wrote it up and not how Canelo originally presented it on this particaly hard term. Now Canelo only has 50 days to secure an opponent for his date so he strategically decided to call off this fight and leave it possible to pick up negations for a later date however for right now he has to secure a fighter for his hard date.
