Personally, I don't even think that's wise. This kid needs to be someone's star pupil, not just another face in a crowded gym. Sparring in Southern California would definitely be a good idea so he can work with different styles in sparring but he needs a lot of attention from a trainer; something Roach can't give him.
Sonsona has alot of work to do still

I do agree that winning a title at this age could be detrimental to his development. Viloria comes to mind. There's been alot of disasters with having won a world-title at such a young age.
The most infamous one, was Iron Mike Tyson, heard of him. Davey Moore was destroyed by Duran, never heard from again until the news of his suicide. These two are the real tragic ones.
But, there's plenty more. Again, cong**** to Sonsona, but they need to match him up wisely from now on. And to the new champ, please get a new coach.
Now he's gonna have to face top contenders each time he fights. His chin, defense, and endurance will always be tested. These days, a champ can't fight an easy tune-up without being called a "biatch".
He is pretty cagey and showed a lot of maturity for a guy who only had 13 pro fights, though. I do think he needs a better trainer to maximize his potential. His power will bail him out sometimes but he needs to work on his boxing and defensive skills.
To all the huggers, please, no Pacquiao comparisons yet or "he is going to be the next Pacquiao". Kid's got a long way to go.Comment

Sonsona had over 200 amateur fights so he has deceptive experience for being so young. Still, I do feel he could have benefited from learning his craft without the burdens of a world title. He'll have to grow all the way up quickly and face stiff challenges every time out.I do agree that winning a title at this age could be detrimental to his development. Viloria comes to mind.

As far as calling him the next Pacquiao, that was a good performance but that was not Pac-material. Why not let him be the first Marvin Sonsona?Comment

Something just irks me about the way Sr fighting philosophy.Agreed, it was very clear to see that Lopez had much more experience dealing with the later rounds. Sonsona barely worked the body or threw combinations. He won the fight on vigor, power and balls. Those are some good, raw essentials for a world champion but he's going to have to continue to improve. Holding onto the title is much harder than winning one.
I will probably speak to Nonito Sr. and Sonsona some time this week, should be a doozy.
I saw Sr once at one of those local shows, he was actually warming up one of his fighters, and the stuff he showin' his fighter was just off, man.
I know he now has trained two world-champs(His son and Sonsona). And again, I don't think he's a bad coach, i just don't think he can really handle fighters at the highest level.Comment

I dunno, I haven't been around him or seen him train guys. He trains full time with Jun Agrabio I believe in Manila. I think they brought in Nonito Sr. for an extra pair of eyes.Something just irks me about the way Sr fighting philosophy.

I didn't know about his amatuer fights. Good for him. He did show some good ring generalship and impressive survival skill, at times.Sonsona had over 200 amateur fights so he has deceptive experience for being so young.
