Comments Thread For: McGirt Impressed By New Student Callum Smith, Sees Him as Champ at 175

Veteran trainer Buddy McGirt is impressed with his newest student, former super middleweight champion Callum Smith. Smith lost his title, and his unbeaten record, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in their super middleweight unification.

I can see him getting a belt again as well. Just because he got beat by Canelo doesn't mean he's dog sht now.

McGirt might actually be a right fit for Callum if he can get Callum to work behind his jab like he did a bit with Kovalev. Kovalev already had that but McGirt kind of brought it back and made it the focus. Not sure if Callum has it though. He just let Canelo walk straight in without pumping the jab. Wasn’t even like he abandoned the jab. Didn’t use it at all from the get go. Maybe McGirt can teach him to jab.

Well, he looked like dogsht against Ryder, Holzken, Skoglund. It's not as if he had a one off night in his entire career solely against Canelo.

Its hard to fathom a guy with his physical attributes doesn't have a dominant jab. Yet that's the case with Callum. Guy needs to use his length instead of just giving away his reach and length advantages.

Joe Smith. Plant. If he uses his size properly of course. Bivol would be a 60/40 odds?
