I feel like, and I may be wrong, McGirt is that one guy who boxers go to when their career is coming to an end. I just stay seeing him in corners where the fighter gets stopped. I know at one point he won trainer of the year and that award goes a long way in your resume. Like people will always see that. But I just coincidentally happen to see him in a corner of fighters who are getting beat up. Like he turns a fighter really soft and anti-aggression. Like Roach and Robert Garcia bring the aggression out of a fighter. McGirt seems to bring the softness out of a fighter. “Jab, move, stay away, you got this!”

He would probably be great for up and coming amateurs, or like if he takes a 5 year old kid and trains him his whole career. He’d be great. But I just don’t see how he can really help a full grown man who already is done with amateurs, been champion, and his flaws will be his flaws.

I guess the best he can do for Callum Smith is give him newfound confidence probably. Like a placebo effect. And it can work, as placebo effect have been known to actually “fix” issues.

There is also the issue of styles. Like McGirt can matchup Smith vs stylistically easier opponents than Canelo. But can McGirt lead Smith to beat Canelo in a rematch? Does it even matter who is training Smith vs Canelo? Knee jerk reactions to losses is so common. Drop everyone, thinking the issue is the trainer. But it’s just that the other fighter is better than you at everything.

of course he can be champ. The WBA currently has about 5 or 6 of them in that weight class.

I always wanted he and Zurdo to mix it up at 168. Two tall boxers with contrasting enough styles. Both were untested for so long, Zurdo still, so…..

With all due respect to Mr. McGirt he is a well respected Trainer but is he really one of the best? I personally don't think so respectfully, I don't think he is going to make Callum Better or anything like that but good luck to them hopefully he proves me wrong. Wouldn't mind seeing Callum go up to 175 and pull off some upsets and shake things up in that Division

He got legitimately injured in the fight yet still went the 12. He could have easily quit like BJS but fought on.

Plant isn’t a champion at 175 casual, Joe Smith would knock his ass out and Bivol is more like 90/10 odds with the 10 being if there was some fluke injury. You’re so transparent. The only reason you’re trying to praise Smith is because you think it enhances Canelo to do so. Smith is nothing more than a UK level talent who made his name fighting other Euros, including low level fielding and a past prime Froch leftover in Groves. Ryder is basic and still worked him over but got robbed.
