Devin Haney Did Not Receive Too Much Interest From Matchroom? Possibly Headed Elsewhere?

So according to Steve Kim from his latest podcast episode, Haney had a month of exclusive negotiation with Matchroom just pass and he did not receive all that much interest from Matchroom to re-sign. Now, that could be that they were not interested in signing him to what he was demanding, but he is now a complete free agent. He can obviously re-sign with Matchroom if they come back and offer him what he wants but I think this is good news in getting the Lopez fight or the winner of Lopez/Lomachenko. TR has the guys at 135 and THE guy at 140 and if that is where Haney is headed, that move makes a lot of sense. Let's be real, he is on the same side of the street as Ryan Garcia and he's just not getting that fight. Garcia could have become Haney's mandatory but chose another fight instead.

Where do you think Haney is headed to in the next few months?

Whats he done to garner interest? Hes a talented kid but not an exciting fighter. Maybe he signs with PBC and gets the tank fight.

I think it’s a simple case of he’ll go wherever pays him most. I probably see him staying with Matchroom/DAZN as they seem to be paying good money for non-drawing fighters like Haney, Andrade, Farmer etc. I’m not sure TR/ESPN or PBC/FOX/Showtime would offer him more than DAZN are willing to.

In terms of options, TR has the best two guys at 135, however PBC has the biggest draw, but in all honesty I don’t see Haney hanging with Lopez, Loma or Tank all beat him comfortably IMO. I think he’d be much wiser trying to get a fight with Ryan Garcia on DAZN as that’s much more winnable for him.

I don't think he wants to sign with the PBC. Mayweather Promotions tried to sign him a few times and he declined their offer. It is going to be Matchroom or TR in all likelihood. But this man was getting like 3M to fight the likes of Linares. Will TR want to get in another situation where they are giving heavy guarantees for someone that isn't a great draw? TR does have the fights he wants though.

But if he wants the Garcia fight, possibly will sign with GBP? Highly unlikely.

If he wants Tank, then he should get it guaranteed in his contract that he gets Tank within three fights or then is able to go elsewhere or gets an insane purse against another opponent.

If I were a promoter I'd be very cautious with Haney. His first 10 rounds against Linares showed him to be a great talent. His last two round suggested a serious flaw. Getting knocked down is one thing but he never recovered.

I'd definitely gun for a Garcia fight if I were him as well.

See, I think he can pretty much compete with all of them. He's still a very hard guy to hit consistently and has great size for the weight class. But damn man, he's going to be hell to negotiate with considering the purses he has been getting at the mere age of 21 and 22 lol.

But he never got knocked down. It's okay for a fighter to get hurt. Errol got hurt coming up and his chin has proven to be just fine. Canelo got hurt early on and his chin proved to be just fine. DLH was getting dropped and he ended up having one of the best chins in the game.

That's not a huge deal. I would say he didn't really know how to react to getting hurt so that's why he was holding the way he was but it was a good learning experience.

More than that, if you are a promoter, you have to decide if you want to pay this kid 3-4M a fight when he's not a big draw yet. Will they be confident they can take him to another level? Will top names help with that? I bet he was asking for around 4-5M guarantee a fight and even more against the top names with Matchroom.

I just don’t think he has the pop to compete with top guys, I think they’ll walk through him tbh. They’re also skilled enough to find openings too. Maybe he’ll prove me wrong but I think he’s out of his depth in those matchups.

Garcia is pretty flat footed so I potentially see Haney outboxing him, although when Garcia lets his hands go I see him having a lot of success too. I favour Garcia by stoppage but I think it’s an interesting fight and could see Haney winning on points.

Its hearns fault for hyping up and overpaying the boring, unproven little shlthead. Now he wants more than what he's definitely not worth.

Hopefully, he lands up on Top Rank and ESPN. They have better fighters around his weight division. We can potentially see him fight both Lopez and Taylor if he signs with Top Rank.
