Who even needs to know where Scotland is? All Ellerbe is saying is, to the business side of things (casual Davis fans), Taylor is nonentity. Davis can fight a plumber next and that crowd will be there. Even to me (a hardcore), Taylor is nothing, a C+ at best. I don't see anything. Davis doesn't need his belts.Last edited by BoxingIsGreat; 06-29-2021, 02:15 PM.Comment

You can play it safe for the majority of your career but you're never going to reach your full potential that way whether it's skillwise or financially. They did a great job building up his name so far, but now is the time to make the big fights because win lose or draw with that style, he's always going to be a big name and continue to make a ton of money. He can make a fortune fighting other champions and then rematching them regardless of whether he stays undefeated or not, all he has to do is to make sure ge never gets dominated 12-0 or get KOed in a non-competitive fight. Taking the safe way is never going to make him realize his fill potential and he has a lot of it!Comment

This is why promoters are comfortable with there being so many belts. And this is why they want a boxing fan base that isn't knowledgeable.
They can make money by selling "championship" fights against lower risk opponents and the fans won't know any better.
If there was only one world championship belt and everybody knew it then it would be a lot harder to pass of one of their boxers as being "the best.". Not without him having to actually take a risk.
Ellerbe isn't the only one who wants to operate like this, though. Bob Arum has been using that model for decades. He basically has propped up the WBO into being a major sanctioning body just so that he can pull it off.Comment

As if anyone of them knew who Barrios was before the fight... Barrios is not more known than Taylor nor was he a real world champion. Lol at people throwing around the world scholar and historian, as if you need to be either to know who won the 140lb title fight a few weeks ago.... I mean only 1.6 million people tuned in.. I'm sure tank sold 2 million PPVS though hey? GTFO...Last edited by YoungManRumble; 06-29-2021, 02:19 PM.Comment

If the kid can make $ milions fighting second tier guys on PPV then good for him I guess. Won't fault any fighter for making the most money they can whatever way they can. Dudes gonna tune in to watch him win or hoping he'll lose or whatever. I enjoy watching him - kid's super talented and explosive - but I ain't gonna annoint him top of anything until he's at least beaten a top 5 guy in one of the divisions he's fought in.Comment

I like Tank, I enjoy his fighting style and I enjoy his frankness when he speaks (he was very honest about not knowing what to expect against Barrios). Tank lets his team handle the business side and that's when I get frustrated. It's great that he has a following and can pack the house. It's not great (for me as a fan) if his team use that to cherry pick their way through his career.
I think Tank himself would fight anyone anywhere. He's game. He took risks early against Pedraza and then going to the UK. Ellerbe and Mayweather seem to have a different plan for him...Comment
