You don't get into the $70 and up range until the general public recognizes your name or if it's a real barnburner matchup and there's the entire hardcore boxing fandom watching. Gervonta Davis is not that name. Is he an exciting fighter ? Sure. But even 1/2 the hardcore boxing fans just look at him as a ****** thug. He certainly doesn't come across as the next Sugar Ray Leonard. Even Teofimo Lopez isn't a household name. But put the 2 of them against each other in the ring, then yes, the $70 fee is justified. No PPV should be over 70. This Davis vs Barrios fight, in my mind , isn't even PPV worthy. Tops $29.99 if it must be PPV. Then it might sell a bit. The $70 figure is outrageous. They'll be lucky to crack 100,000 buys.

im a tank fan...but this is obviusly way too much for this fight....heck even having it on ppv alone is kinda wild...but haymon and espinoza know what theyre doing so if they think these moves are wise and worth the risk then who am i to judge? they are only two of the most successful at what they do over the last 10 years or so

i agree...and im sure many think its a rip off.....but like ive said...haymon and espinoza arent dumb....two of the must successful in the business at what they do...they obviously think its worth it and worth the risk

Boxing just does money grabs with no regard for the future of it's sport long term going forward. Yet they wonder why the popularity of boxing has declined so drastically that kids from youtube are a bigger draw than Pros because they're bringing their own fans with them compared to some Pro Boxer who is trying to build up his fanbase within a Sport that is not even that popular

I'm not paying for anymore PPV cards, the cable networks took to much advantage
of the fans constantly raising the PPV prices throughout the years.
You can only abuse something but so much before you actually ruin it completely.
Tank versus Berrios should be a very good fight, with Berrios actually having a chance to win.
If I were betting on this fight I would still put my money on Tank taking it, by late KO.
When better fights are made I'll just go to a sports bar pay 20.00 at the door, and see
those fights that way.
Argenis Mendez shouldn't even be on this card, he doesn't have a significant win in years.

I agree but live streaming is harming the sport. You can't grow the sport this way. It won't attract any new fans or the casual viewer so long as it is on the World Wide Web. Moreover, you won't be able to build new stars over the internet either. As it would become more difficult for the rising stars of boxing to find a mainstream crossover audience online. DAZN is only good for the established fighter who's had some television exposure. In addition, it's good for me as a boxing fan but it is detrimental to those of us who don't watch boxing. Taking the sport entirely off of television will inevitably ruin boxing in the long run.

But you recognise that in a comparison between the DAZN subscription model and the PPV model for this fight, the barrier to entry for this fight is much, much higher. When you talk about attracting the new fans or the casual viewer, who out of those is paying 70 bucks to watch a name bash a nobody?

PBC was originally predicated on the idea that it would not do PPVs precisely for the reasons you cite, yet have begun to do a sequence of weak-ass match-ups as PPVs. And here we have Showtime with a totally uncompelling matchup at a whopping great price.

We are already at a point in time when streaming services with subscription fees is becoming something like the norm across the whole spectrum of entertainment and that is only going to become more normal with time.

You do raise a valid point that all of these promotional outfits need to be thinking about how they build new names in the sport and entice general sports fans to become interested in these fighters. Social media is one method. I'm surprised fighters don't try and get themselves on non-sports shows more often, just to get themselves well known.

One of the ways Joshua got so well known in the UK -- alongside his boxing exploits -- was by appearing on shows like Top Gear and Graham Norton. That's how you reach the casual.
