He lost to Kovalev imo, but got a razor thin decision. He got back in the ring with Kov and stopped him dirty. After that he had climbed his Everest but his body couldn't hack it anymore. He might as well have been undisputed at 168 and then had most of the belts at 175 so retiring with an undefeated record means he had nothing left to fight for, legacy wise. I would have liked to see fight Adonis Stevenson though to try to become undisputed at 175.
So Why Did Ward Retire?

He pretty much ****** in Kovalev fights.
Bivol and Beterbiev would beat him badly in next fights.Comment

Injuries, and he’s fighting an insurance company right now for a settlement. Plus he was never making big purses. Why go through all that crap again in your mid 30’s when you don’t have to? Especially when your two mandatories are Beterbiev and Bivol.Comment

He didn’t want to face the other beasts in the division like Beterbiev and Bivol.Comment

lucked out against kovalev, saw that his weight division was heating up and he was gonna catch a loss soon so he decided to retire.Comment

Ward is a great fighter, p4p 1 when he was prime, but he DID take a good deal of punishment those last 2 Kovalev fights. I know record shows 2-0 vs Kova, be he really got beat up in those fights, go re-watch them. That first one should have gone to Kova pretty clearly and he went through a bit of fire to get that stoppage in the second fight; this all against a prime Kova. Few people could do that.Comment

The injuries like others mentioned. He said in the first Kovalev fight, he had a knee injury that didn't allow him to run like he wanted to in that camp.Comment

1-He had a history of injuries..last one was his knee
2-Why does he need an excuse to retire if he is well off and supporting his family??Comment
