So Why Did Ward Retire?

Injuries and roc nation wasn't gonna keep paying him all that money. He definitely wasn't worth that much.Comment

He was a good fighter, but he is not an ATG and he was never a big star.
Should he have risked to get knocked out cold by Beterbiev and outboxed by Bivol for small money?Comment

Because he barely got past Kovalev and then fouled his way to one of the worst victories in modern boxing and the death nail in US ppv boxing.Comment

- -Nobody wanted to see Wart low blow, butt, hit on the break, rabbit punch, grab, elbow, and cry.
Only Granny Bernices wanted to dream about Wart..

Two mandatories of Beterbiev and Bivol. And the rise of Canelo.

people are goint to have differing opinions on this...the worst one of them all and the one that isnt valid is "he retired to avoid beterbiev and the other EE 175lbers"....thats typical "i hate all US/black fighter" logic
my opinion is that there were no fights worth getting up to train for anymore......because there werent really any fights at the time that were going to pay him more than what he made in the kovalev fights.....at that point if youre ward youre only getting up for the same money or more....most likely at that point ward was only interested in fights that would pay him more....and the reality is that kovalev was pretty well known in the sport...and even those fights were only appealing to the hardcore fans and didnt sell very well for as great of a matchup as it was....so how much would people have cared to see him against gvozdyk, bivol or beterbiev? even less...and he wouldnt have even taken home the same money....Comment

He didn’t take much punishment in terms of eating punches but his body took a lot of punishment through training, sparring, fighting etc. He had a lot of injuries and I think he made a conscious decision to get out before his body broke down, and on top of that, he didn’t really have the financial incentive to continue, I’m pretty sure HBO made him an offer on an extension he considered low, following the second Kovalev fight.
It’s a shame though, unbelievable fighter, not the most pleasing of styles but so intelligent in the ring. He’s the USA’s second best fighter behind Mayweather of the last 10-15 years IMO.Comment
