Comments Thread For: Povetkin's Promoter Hopes Win Over Whyte Will Force WBC Mandatory Shot

Andrey Ryabinskiy, promoter of heavyweight Alexander Povetkin, is hoping the WBC will order a mandatory shot in the aftermath of a rematch win over Dillian Whyte. Last August, Povetkin scored a sensational one-punch knockout of Whyte in the fifth round.

Despite the obvious dislike of Whyte on this site, I am having a hard time seeing Povetkin winning this rematch. Whyte was pretty much in control of their first match and I see Povetkin as nearly a year older and this is his first fight having fought off a major reaction to the virus. It is the joys of combat sports that we know there is no deficit that cannot be overcome. Povetkin was losing, but he stayed focused and nailed Whyte perfectly. But If Whyte comes in respectful of Povetkin's power, I see no reason he cannot outwork and outbox the older, slower opponent.

They're ranked WBA .. this is for the WBC and as this is for the interim belt you give up all rights to rankings non WBC.

Yes, but with Fury-Joshua series he would have to wait until 2022.

You'd imagine that the interim champion would be in line by the time Joshua v Fury 2 takes place (if those fights ever do take place).

I'll also guess the winner will take keep warm fights. Dillian learned that lesson already.

He should be mandatory now. He destroyed that bum Dillian Whyte.

Whyte should've had to start back from the bottom of the pile.

I think more like 2023 - and Wilder is #1 in the WBC at the moment so I would put a lot on a final eliminator for mandatory. WBC and Wilder are that couple who always hook up at parties.
