Discuss the difference in execution between Cotto and Mosley against Margarito

cotto didnt use his feet properly. sure he would slip away from margarito after exchanges on the rope but he would just walk away to another corner of the ring and let margarito pound him again. he should've used his feet intelligently, like turning margarito in the middle of the ring and stayed off the ropes.
it was nothing that mosley did better, it's what cotto didnt do.Comment

Cotto is younger and prime, and still can't match the chin and stamina of a 37 yr old SSM. His strategy of hit n move woulda been gr8 if he could do it all nite. But his endurance faltered and Marg beat him down. Cotto's heart was taken by a guy he absolutely couldn't hurt or get to back up. And he didn't clinch or avoid Marg's shots too well.
SSM went right at Marg, picked his chances to slug and landed body blows that Cotto never bothered to try. Marg was thrown off himself bein in wit a guy he couldn't back up. And SSM clinched in between flurries to rest. Marg don't get discouraged gettin hit, cuz he hits right back every time. But it's when he couldn't hit back that he started to wither mentally. And it was easier for SSM to hurt him when he was discouraged.Comment

Very Good Post!
I think you nailed it. Cotto looked more like he was trying to fend Margarito off of him. Mosely was trying to knock Margarito's head off and he also put in really nice bodywork from the get go. After Mosely got off, he tied up and didn't allow Margarito to get off with anything. Here we have 2 fighters that fought Margarito: Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley.
One was dominated and destroyed by Margarito and the other dominated and destroyed Margarito. But why?
This isn't a thread to prove who's the better fighter. Anyone that comes in here pulling ANY type of triangle theory BS is practically admitting they know **** about boxing and should get the **** out of their little sister's room and let her use the computer to finish her report on butterfly metamorphosis.
Cotto vs. Margarito
Cotto started off the fight strong, effectively using the ring to box on his back foot. He would land combinations and move out the way after Margarito would pause during the punches. This was the way the fight went for most of the first half. Cotto's strategic punching and movement nulled anything Margarito was trying to do offensively.
But eventually, the pressure from Margarito began to wear on Cotto and slowly, Cotto began hangin on the ropes attempting to SLIP punches in a stationary position. His stamina just wasn't enough to keep mobile and away from the trouble pockets. Margarito finally was catching him, chipping away at Cotto's durability.
Mosley vs. Margarito
Right off the bat, Mosley went power to power with Margarito. It seemed like almost every punch Mosley threw was a power punch. When Margo got close, he would crowd him or turn him to prevent him from going to work. Mosley's strategy wasn't too complex or complicated. Stick HARD and move. Like ****m asked for, he "swam without getting wet".
Now the difference I feel was that Mosley went AT Margo with power and then avoided the danger by clinching or side stepping where as Cotto let Margo come to him landing hard shots, but not the kind of shots you get full leverage on when you're going forward. Mosley also had the stamina to keep repeating his offensive attacks where as Cotto can't keep a powerful pace a whole 12 rounds.
Is Mosley more powerful than Cotto? I don't think so, but he used his power more intelligently. The difference is, cotto used his power to KEEP Margarito away where as Mosley used his to PUT Margarito away.Comment

Diffrence? SSM clinched and didn't gass, Mosely also wen't to the body. Cotto did a great job early on but he never had the stamina to keep the pace up and it wasn't so much the stamina but, Margarito was coming on stronger and stronger due to Cotto making no attempt to go to the body.Comment

Mosley's keys to victory against Margarito were:
He used his jab to keep Margarito on the back foot.
He worked Margarito's body which Margarito didn't seem to expect.
He used his superior handspeed to get his shots off first and would then tie Margarito up to stop Margarito getting off his own offense.
Cotto's downfall against Margarito were:
He used too much lateral movement.
He layed on the ropes most of the fight. ( this is were Margarito normally does his best work)
He traded with the bigger Margarito.
He didn't clinch at close quarters.
He didn't throw body shots.Comment
