sparring partners
the primary attribute of the sparring partner is his similarity in fyting style of the opponent. or he can at most immitate how the opponent fyts. this is how you solve the timing of your foe. the weakness in defense is emphasized here, over and over, so that manny can time cotto for that opening.
mcmillan's switching stance was mentioned, just like how cotto sometimes switch from orthodox to southpaw.
second characteristic is when the trainor/fyter wants to improve/hone/polish on his own style. Antillon was used for the ricky fyt not because he immitates ricky's style...rather to make manny real sharp and alert in his reflexes. roach opined that no way ricky beats a "sharp" manny.
another consideration, like for manny, is sparring with bigger partners. manny developed his punching resistance by sparring with welters and jr.middlewts when he prepared for oscar and ricky. although admittedly, his punching resistance is not tested yet.... can't blame manny there. but it is true that he sometimes let his sparmates **** him hard in the body while leaning on the ropes. there was a brief moment in round 2 when ricky threw 4-5 combos to manny's body, on ropes....replay the fyt. perhaps we will see cotto do more in this department.

some crappy fighters are great for sparring while some great fighters make for crappy sparring partners.
they've used him as a sparring partner before. they know what he brings to the table.
it's not like cotto brings anything to the table skillwise anyway.Originally posted by Talisayen View Postwhy bring a good sparring partner, it just a tune up anyways?

I beleive Freddie is just being the good trainer that he has been and preparing his fighter for all possible scenarios.
