    Cotto's training goes full blast

    By NICK GIONGCO
    August 16, 2009, 6:58pm
The arrival of a conditioning coach and a nutritionist signal the start of Miguel Cotto’s full-blast training for his November 14 clash with Manny Pacquiao.

The past two weeks, Cotto has been showing up in a local gym in Puerto Rico every other day for light workouts under the supervision of chief trainer Joe Santiago, something that his team believes will help them prepare for the toughest training camp the 28-year-old Cotto will head into in the coming weeks.

Cotto said Los Angeles-based Phil Landman, a South African native, is due in Puerto Rico on August 22. Two days later, Landman will be running alongside Cotto in the morning and attend the afternoon workout as well as they try to come up with a battle plan for Pacquiao.

Their main concern about Pacquiao is the Filipino’s blinding speed and this is the reason why Cotto is even thinking of tapping the services of a Lilliputian fighter Ivan Calderon, also of Puerto Rico, to help him get use to the Filipino’s lightning-quick reflexes.

Calderon is a mere 108-pounder but his quickness, Team Cotto, says, will enable Cotto to experience what would it be like to be on the same ring with Pacquiao.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, remains in the thick of his showbiz commitments, filming a movie that is due for release during the December film festival.

But chief trainer Freddie Roach has already done his homework, having signed up four sparring partners, including young junior-welterweight prospect Raymond Serrano and lightweight Urbano Antillon.

Pacquiao is not going to begin training until he gets back to the Philippines from a four-city press tour that kicks off on September 10 in New York. From the Big Apple, Pacquiao will travel to Puerto Rico, then to San Francisco, and finally to Los Angeles.

Pacquiao plans to train for one or two weeks in Baguio before camping out possibly in Mexico.

sounds like cotto is training for the fight of his life. sparring with calderon will be good for cotto because of calderons speed and reflexes.

I think that will help but nothing they can do will emulate Pac's speed.

I wonder if Pac is serious about this fight though, doing movies and all that stuff. I know Roach ahs had problems with Pac in that past as far as commitment, so I wonder if this is more of the same?

calderon is faster so they can emulate his speed but they can't emulate his punching power and the speed of his punches.

I honestly think that Cotto is no where near afraid of Pacquaio's power. He took flush punches from a 170 lb Clottey and a 165 lb Margarito and many more. Its the speed that he will work to neutralize.

I see this fight going very much like Malignaggi v Cotto. Cotto I think will be willing to take two to land one.

Seems like Manny is underestimating Cotto, and Cotto is taking this very seriously. Good. Keep filming, Manny...keep training, Miguel.
J/k...I'm sure Manny will train adaquately. I hope both are in tip top shape and at their best and have their prospective "A" game on. No excuses.

I after i read that 1st post, and replied...i thought a bit more about it and remembered why i learned not to underestimate him. So i edited my post. I didn't know this is routine for him to wait, then train like hell.

i could be wrong, but at this stage of Miguels career, i don't think he pays to much attention to what his corner says...i think he is too focused on what he needs to adapt to in the ring and in his head, planning his strategy. At least that's what i kinda sense what's happening.

It must be hard to take your focus off the fight enough to really comprehend what your corner is telling you, then re-focus with newly given advice. Especially if you have a lot of pride, and are facing a formiddable opponent. But i don't know what it's like to be in the ring and this is just a guess. I try to picture myself in there and this is what i came up with.

I give boxers credit that can listen carefully to their corner, and actually carry out their instructions. Most i see i don't really see them applying the directions after the bell rings and they get back in there. They mostly seem to continue what they were doing. Some fare better than others.
