How good was Jeff Lacy before Calzaghe?

It's very possible that he was over rated.

As a Calzaghe I used to think he was not overrated...then I saw his fight against Omar Sheika. It was written in that fight, how far he would go.

Before Calzaghe he was never in with anyone I would say is top shelf, he gets in there with Joe and gets destroyed.....so he is and always was just a decent fighter.

He was good but not that great, He has the built of tyson and i think that remind some people of mike, The thing is if you follow boxing deeply you can see he isnt skilled just a ripped guy that everyone thought would KO anyone he landed on.

I followed Lacy a bit there and thought that he had the power to KO almost anyone. I had never seen Calzaghe before that fight and we were all deciding who to place money on (a group of buddies came over for a game of poker and to watch the fights), when I just decided to go with Calzaghe because of his record and the number of title defenses that he had at the time.

I cleaned house that night with like 4 bets at 20 a pop, not a lot of cash but free money. Lacy looked good before but I don't know if it was how bad that Calzaghe destroyed him or that Lacy actually is damaged goods now. I know his shoulder is in pretty bad shape but he used to look a lot more precise and conditioned. He seems to be slower and tires rather easily (I can see why with all the muscles he has to fuel)

To answer the question, I would have to say that his competition prior to the Calzaghe fight made Lacy look better than he really was or is.

I thought he only looked okay against Reid. Reid was shot by then.

I used to post under the username crumble on here, I said Joe would win pretty big but might be knocked down at some point, and that was on the belief that Joe was well past his sell-by-date, as was the popular opinion at the time. No way could a fighter that musclebound and mechanical do anything but get smashed up by Calzaghe in any time of shape.

Lacy was made for Calzaghe from the feet up. The entire Calzaghe camp knew it, from Enzo to Frank Warren. Easy pickings.

Still an impressive beatdown of epic proportions.

Sakio Bika is a better fighter than Jeff Lacy in actuality.

I remember hearing quite a lot about Lacy before actually seeing him in the ring. First time I watched him was against Syd Vanderpool and I remember being very, very underwhelmed. not only was he nothing like what I heard, I wasn't even sure if he was good. His power appeared overrated as well. I didn't expect Calzaghe to kick his ass the way he did but I did think he'd outbox him.

Sadly, I had him beating Joe C. I think it was a matter of underestimating a Euro fighter rather than overrating an American one. Euros always get the short end of the stick when it comes to boxing opinions.
