Most Overrated Fights

Personally I liked the De La Hoya-Quartey fight so much because of this hard-to-articulate sensation of just having two highly skilled, primed boxers at the top of their game going at it in a very competetive fight. I also enjoyed the whole "chessmatch" side to it

A great technical affair punctuated by moments of great excitement, the twelth round and the commentary during the break after the 11th and during the early parts of the round where Oscar throws the kitchen sink at Ike is so great and I'm usually out of my seat even when just rewatching it

For the record I definitely had Oscar winning that fight

Morales/Barrera 3 is extremely overrated. I've watched that fight like 4-5 times and after the first time I never understood why everyone said it was so great. There was a lot of missing and honestly the action was not that great. A lot of the excitement in the broadcast was generated from Lampley overhyping exchanges.

Just curious...why do you feel that way? I mean it had two of the greatest heavyweights of all time going at it, who absolutely hated each other. It was pretty violent and throw in the fact the in ring temperatures were over 100 degrees makes it even more crazy. There was a lot of drama, momentum shifts, and a crazy ending. Joe doesnt want to quit even though he's on the verge of going blind, his trainer throws in the towel, and on the other side it looks like Ali is asking for his gloves to be cut off because he's about to pass out from heat exhaustion.

Absolutely. That fight must be in the top 3 in the greatest fights ever in boxing history.

Dont get me wrong, the 1st one was way better, but it was one excellent fight.

the 11th round was sick, and it ended just the way it needed

imo, the 1st Ali-Frazier fight was better than the third one. but maybe thats just me.

96 had some real excellent fights. but Holyfield-Tyson stole all the limelight

I feel the same way about Hagler-Hearns, but I also have to keep in mind that I saw it taped, after I knew who won, and so that kind of takes some of the excitement out. I did watch other great fighters years after the fact, that I think are easily superior to Hagler-Hearns, but I still try to keep the live factor in mind, especially for a megafight like that. My old co-worker told me about how great it was watching it closed-circuit when it happened, everyone standing up throughout the 1st round and all.

There's more to a fight then the actual fight itself. The career paths and hype of two great fighters leading up to such an event is amazing. Sometimes the buzz that surrounds certain fights isn't lived up to, but when it is, it makes it that much more special.
