The Aztecs inhabited the central part of Mexico, what we know today as Mexico City. They also ruled over all the neighbouring towns. They were primarily a warrior state. Contrary to popular belief, the Ateec empire's prime only lasted for about 150 years, from somewhere between 1350 - 1400 to 1521.
The Mayans lived in Southeast Mexico and Central America. They were the most important pre-hispanic culture in Latin America. More than warriors, they were scientists. There are many groups within the Mayan ethnicity and that's why you can find vestiges of their culture all over Mexico and Central America. Their prime was between 900 and 1400 aD.
In Mexico, to be called indian is considered an insult, an insult whose roots come from the colonial times, when being a pure blood indian was the worst thing that could possibly happen to you.
they called them indians because
Colon thought he had gotten all the way around
the world and that he was in India,
he had no idea there was a whole other
continient, in the middle.
