Nate's cut is from not taking a single punch to it after the headbutt occurred. If it opens anymore it's going to go down towards his eye, not out towards his temple. Nate said he was seeing spots and when the doctor asked him if he wanted to stop fighting he said "no". With 3 headbutts in 3 rounds, the chances of another headbutt or 10 were very good. Nate made the right decision.

Marciano's nose was badly cut by an elbow thrown by Ezzard Charles.
In those days a cut stoppage would result in a loss whether it had been caused by a legal punch or not, so when Marciano was told that the fight was in danger of being stopped due to his nose which was gushing blood, Marciano went out and stopped Charles in the very next round.
There were fears that the cut on the nose would end Marciano's career but he did recover to fight on for a couple of years.Comment
