I think this is a pick em fight. Tought 2 predict a winner, I doubt we see a blowout 4 eithier guy.
Some thoughts on Pacquiao v Cotto - I'm started to lean closer towards Cotto

TS I thought you knew better. While I think Pacquiao has not improved much since he fought marquez a second time, he has improved a helluva lot since he lost to EM by one point when he was a 1-2 fighter. Also you have to see that Cotto is nowhere as near up to the level of toughness in the chin category as EM, and that Morales had a lot more heart, and grit, and most of all STAMINA than Cotto. IMO Cotto isn't on Morales' level, and if Cotto gets hit anywhere as near as much as Morales did he will be sleeping by the 6th round.
I guess the make or break factor could be Cotto's ability to tough it out and outlast Pacquiao, and based on the Clottey fight and bits and pieces of past fights, I personally think there's a good chance he can
for the record I'm not saying Cotto will win, or that i'd even bet on him to win, but i'm just realising it's very far from a foregone conclusion and is at most 60-40 in *whomevers* favour
Pacquiao went into De La Hoya and Hatton fights with a lot of questions being asked of him, whereas in this one it seems no one's daring to doubt him again and that's dangerous when he's gonna be sharing the ring with someone as live as CottoComment

Why does everyone bring up this BS about Cotto's chin? Since he moved up to WW when have you seen him actually hurt by anyone including Mosley, other than Margacheato!? So give the chin BS a rest already. Come fight night when he takes Pacman's best shot and he's still standing there you'll all be saying, DAMN Cotto can take a shot! I don't see this fight going past 7 rounds, but it's going to be Pacman sleeping not Cotto! Pacman has shown me nothing new in his last fights, big deal he beat Diaz, people still say WHO? Big deal he beat DLH, or shall we say a dried up prune called DLH, and Hatton, who was almost KO'd by Collazo who I wouldn't exactly call a puncher or killer! Look at this fight objectively and don't tell me how Clottey beat Cotto. I was at that fight and if it wasn't for the headbutt, Cotto would of handed Clottey his ass rather easily, but the headbutts made Cotto a little leary and Clottey did give up the last 2 rounds or he would of won. Clottey wasn't robbed he gave it away.Comment

I don't think he's one dimensional at all. But it's well documented and quite clear that he has trouble with top class well educated boxers who don't allow him to engage, and Cotto has it in him to exploit this flaw
He needs to be very careful because Pacquiao can explode at any given moment so he'll need to be constantly two steps ahead of Manny
Plaster or not, slow as molasses Margarito was landing on Cotto as early as round 2 of their fight. Cotto cannot adjust it seems. Manny is more precise and will be landing at will and from angles unheard of. It will probably take an accumulation of punches to wear out Cotto, but eventually he'll be taken out.Comment

That's true enough, but Cotto has nowhere the skill level of Marquez and/or Morales. He's bigger but that's about it. That doesn't mean he's a bum, but Marquez and Morales are first ballot HOFers. Cotto is arguably not. He's a big guy with some skills that doesn't even come close to the caliber that Manny has fought.

Maybe Cotto isn't as good as Marquez or Morales on a pound-for-pound level, but he is still very, very good and has a bigger physical advantage over Pacquiao than those two did
I think this physical advantage might allow him to control Pacquiao and keep him under wraps better than he did MargaritoComment

I think people are underestimating the fact that Cotto is a very proficient boxer - as in boxer boxer - and if he were to win, that would be his key to victory.
If he takes the Morales/Marquez route of boxing Pacquiao with controlled outbursts of aggression to put some hurt on his body every now and then, he can beat Pacman
Pacquiao's improvement since the second Marquez fight - which he, in my and a lot of other people's eyes, lost - is being overstated somewhat in my opinion. The Pacquiao who crushed De La Hoya and Hatton is not so far from the one Marquez out-thought and often out-fought
Now, Cotto may not be quite as good in the out-thinking area as Marquez, but he evens it up by excelling in the fighting area, with a large advantage in pure brute strength, which should ensure his body attacks bleed out more of Pacquiao's stamina and will to fight along with discouraging him from engaging so freely
When the fight was first rumoured I was really confident Manny had Cotto's number and would likely beat him in a pretty violent fashion, but after some deeper consideration I'm not so sure anymore. Cotto will need to fight the fight of his life and be disciplined from the opening bell to the closing one, but he can do it.
Back to the topic, Cotto is not the same league with Marquez and he will look bad the same as the others Pac fought who is not on Marquez level. If Cotto will win just because of his size advantage.Last edited by whirlwind; 07-26-2009, 09:40 PM.Comment

I agree Judah would be a massive match up problem for Pac and Judah was allowed to bully him even a little in the first 6 he may end up KO'ing Judah is dangerous. Lucky for Pac judah has no leverage whatsoever to get any good fights right now.Comment
