Some thoughts on Pacquiao v Cotto - I'm started to lean closer towards Cotto

I think people are underestimating the fact that Cotto is a very proficient boxer - as in boxer boxer - and if he were to win, that would be his key to victory.

If he takes the Morales/Marquez route of boxing Pacquiao with controlled outbursts of aggression to put some hurt on his body every now and then, he can beat Pacman

Pacquiao's improvement since the second Marquez fight - which he, in my and a lot of other people's eyes, lost - is being overstated somewhat in my opinion. The Pacquiao who crushed De La Hoya and Hatton is not so far from the one Marquez out-thought and often out-fought

Now, Cotto may not be quite as good in the out-thinking area as Marquez, but he evens it up by excelling in the fighting area, with a large advantage in pure brute strength, which should ensure his body attacks bleed out more of Pacquiao's stamina and will to fight along with discouraging him from engaging so freely

When the fight was first rumoured I was really confident Manny had Cotto's number and would likely beat him in a pretty violent fashion, but after some deeper consideration I'm not so sure anymore. Cotto will need to fight the fight of his life and be disciplined from the opening bell to the closing one, but he can do it.

Great post. That really depends on Cotto. The best pure boxing I saw from Cotto was in the Margarito fight. But problem was Margarito is slow so I'm not that sure if he can use it on pac. The speedy fighters ... he fought with pressure and timing. I think this is one that he will use on pac. We'll see on fight night.

I'm simply stating the second Marquez fight is the most recent example of Pacquiao being beatable, and almost a blueprint on how to give him problems

People often cite Pacquiao's dramatic improvement when arguing why he'll beat whoever, or why whatever past Pacquiao performance is irrelevent - and he evidently has dramatically improved over the course of his career - but he was close enough to how good he is now in that fight, and he still arguably lost and looked very human

Yeah I totally agree with your assessment. People like to say Pacquiao has improved so much in every fight but he hasn't improved that much. Marquez was able to out think him and outbox him in the 2nd fight. What the DLH/Hatton fights proved was that Pacquiao's power carried to that weight. The thing with Pacquiao is that he is so fast and powerful that hes a difficult opponent for most people. I guess well find out if Cotto can out think Pacquiao.

I think Pacquiao is an awesome person. I like his style and he is very skilled...but I don't think one can judge much on his last two performances because A) de la hoya was old and possibly weight drained and B) hatton was never a great fighter.

I agree Judah would be a massive match up problem for Pac and Judah was allowed to bully him even a little in the first 6 he may end up KO'ing Judah is dangerous. Lucky for Pac judah has no leverage whatsoever to get any good fights right now.

You know what, this thread is about pacman and cotto, i like both fighters and i just want to watch the fight, but i am leaning more towards a pacman win.

But i totally disagree with judah ****ing up the pacman, have you seen judah's fight with cotto, yes he was fast, yes he was giving cotto some numbers, BUT THAT ONLY LASTED FOR THREE TO FOUR ROUNDS and after he realized he's not doing much damage, HE GIVES THIS ****ING CLUELESS STARE AND DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO DO ANYMORE, THE KID DOESNT HAVE THE HEART, he had no heart to fight cotto for 12rounds, and with the Pacman i really doubt that he'll have the heart to match up with the TAZMANIAN DEVIL!!! Just watch the cotto/judah fight in u-tube, specially the 1minute breaks, look at judah staring at nowhere...

Cotto beat a faster, Steward even said more skilled, man in Zab Judah. Don't ever forget that. Judah would give Pacqiao problems. At least in the first half of the fight, the front runner that he is. I think that Cotto will overawe Pacqiao.

It seems strange for Cotto backers to draw confidence from the way Zab Judah would potentially match up with Pacquiao. Personally, I feel that Pacquiao will pose many of the same problems for Cotto that Judah did early in their fight, using speed and angles from a left handed stance.

Cotto is a badly damaged fighter at this point in his career, and while that was clearly evident to me from his performance against Joshua Clottey, too many seem willing to continute giving him the benefit of the doubt. While he may have dealt with Margarito in a plaster wraps free fight, there can be no doubt that he was punished inalterably on that night. The difference in Pacman-Cotto for me is Manny's ability to avoid punches, and Cotto's inability to do so. Pacquiao will show respect for Miguel's power, but his swift feet and hands will be too much for Cotto to handle.
