This is why a fighter's gloves should never be taped up without a credible source making damn sure nothing illegal is happening. That stuff like this gets by is yet another reason boxing needs one organizational body to govern everything.

One of boxing's saddest days indeed. Tragically ruining Collins life, not to mention his career as a boxer, goes down as one of boxing's darkest moments.

When Collins Sr. felt Resto's gloves and the end of the fight, Resto was acting like it was causing him a great deal of discomfort, and tried to pull his gloves away. Until the very end, Resto continued to disgrace boxing with his shameful antics, by only caring about the W, and completely disregarding a persons life. Collins had suffered a torn iris and permanently blurred vision, that prevented him from boxing again.

I'm glad some sort of justice was rendered, although I believe that justice wasn't served to the full extent.

watch out for the coming of the modern day resto. he is currently on vacation in mexico. although he is banned for a year in the u.s., his boss is not worried because a year suspension is just like a vacation. he can fight sooner than eveyone think. his boss can arrange a fight for his ward anywhere outside america. and in a month or two, he will invade vegas again.

On June 16th 1983, a date that will long live in boxing infamy, junior middleweight prospect Billy Collins Jr., 14-0 (11), fought journeyman Luis Resto, 19-7-3 (8), at sold out Madison Square Garden on the Roberto Duran - Davey Moore under card. Collins, promoted by Top Rank and a heavy favorite, took a frightful beating in losing a 10 round decision, after which Collins’ face was simply grotesque, leaving him virtually blind. It was a case of a fighter with too much courage.

After the fight, Billy’s father, Billy Sr., working in his son’s corner, felt Resto’s gloves and discovered that a significant amount of padding had been removed, later determined by the New York State Athletic Commission as two ounces. The padding was removed from small holes made in the palms of each glove. As a consequence, Collins absorbed hundreds of nearly bare knuckle punches.

Subsequently both Resto and his trainer Carlos “Panama” Lewis were convicted of assault, conspiracy, and criminal possession of a deadly weapon. Both were banned from boxing for life. Resto received a sentence of one to three years, Lewis two to six. Both served two and a half years. [details]

I would be quite suprised if marg didnt use the plaster...cottos face reminds me of billy collins face...the cuts...swelling...blood....and i aint seen cottos face so bust up like tht b4....

I dunno if marg did it but why are people so quick to defend marg? hes the 1 who has been caught cheating tryin to use plaster and because you wanna get 1 over cotto you say he didnt use it...fact is no1 knows but if u were to guess you would say he did use it...

they not only used plaster but removed padding, having plaster under your gloves is a advantage obviously, but it cant be compared to having exposed plaster on your fists.

look at the results, when did margarito make someone look like that? margarito cheated, but this was much more brutal.

Totally agree with both post. He should had been in jail for at least 5 years.

On that same thought and having boxing gone thru this disgrace day and it consecuences against a person's life, I also disagree on Margarito's punishment for 1 year only. He should be banned for at least 2 years.

truly sad **** that lasted long after that night...panama louis should be banned from even looking at gloves...at least resto confessed...but if the case is reopened...doesn't that mean they can both go back to jail?

When you really look at the outcome of these types of actions, it becomes alot more real and to think that marg was willing to put shane mosleys life in danger by putting plaster in his gloves is absolutely disgusting.
