It also has to do with cost, guys back then would alternate a big fight at MSG with a small showing at a local pub. Kids today, as well as TV stations would not never agree to that, unless the fighter is coming back from a loss and even then. So it is just too damn expensive for a guy to fight every month, unless he is ready to fight for little money, and these kids are not.
why does ray robinson have so many garbage bums on his boxrec?

The game was about gate then so you would make what in essence were appearances for locals in lieu of sparring for weeks. It kept decent cash coming until the massive payday. They have lots of bums sure; they also have lots more fights against top guys by and large. Harry Greb, Sam Langford...they had almost as many fights just against world champs and HOFers as a guy like Floyd has total fights. Not a knock; just fact. Then factor in the top ten guys they fought who never got to that level. The old-timers were ILL like that.Comment

Chavez and Duran were some of the last great ones to do this. Paid off.In his autobiography Sugar Ray it says he would fight a few smaller low key fights before a big fight. Robinson said it was the best preparation as he would have to try and really beat the guy rather than going easy in a few sparring sessions. And your right , fighters back then wouldnt get hung up about a loss like some of todays fighters. They were tough and came to win.Comment

Exactly. If fighters today were fighting every month once or twice to pay for food a lot of these undefeated guys would have at least 10 losseswell he did have 200 fights. He fought practically every month. You expect him to fight a guy who is 50-0 every month?
Besides, records can be pretty deceiving. Back then losses weren't the end of the world like they are today. Plenty of tough son of a bitches who had 10, 20 or more losses on their records.Comment
