Besides, records can be pretty deceiving. Back then losses weren't the end of the world like they are today. Plenty of tough son of a bitches who had 10, 20 or more losses on their records.
In his autobiography Sugar Ray it says he would fight a few smaller low key fights before a big fight. Robinson said it was the best preparation as he would have to try and really beat the guy rather than going easy in a few sparring sessions. And your right , fighters back then wouldnt get hung up about a loss like some of todays fighters. They were tough and came to win.

exactly. And I agree with SRR there, staying active is the best preparation. I don't know why more guys don't do it these days, I guess because they don't have to once they start making money, but still it IS better for your career in the long run, imo.

The funny thing people say about Ray is that he really didn't love boxing like you would think.

He fought because he needed the money and took a ton of fights.

It just blows my mind that somebody that talented wasn't all that passionate about it.

It was just a job to him, one he did insanely well.

He fought most of them while he was 40+ years old.

Well I don't know about the lower key fighters he fought but let's not get ahead of ourselves and call these guys "bums" just because their records aren't good.

Anybody remember this guy and anybody going to call him a bum?

                Emanuel Augustus

                won 38 (KO 20) + lost 30 (KO 3) + drawn 6 = 74

Maybe Ray fought some like him but I don't know.

I'm just saying, it doesn't mean they were "easy" fights necessarily.

Ray fought a lot so you need fill me in fighters.

Why spar for practice without pay when you can get paid for it and keep you active?
