Roy Jones: Dullest fighter, biggest waste of talent?

I've just got a copy of the Glen Kelly fight, which coincidentally comes just before the first time Roy was really screened in Limey Land: The Clinton Woods bout.

When I first saw Roy I was excited by his skills and reflexes, but is the guy just a little bit dull to watch? Having all that talent, and all that physical excellence, only to squander it on boxers who shouldn't even be in the same ring?

Chris Byrd is another largely dull fighter, but I think he'd make a great support act: after all, while he's no real draw, he's a thinking man's fighter who can involve those who like the technical side of boxing. But Jones? Even when dominating a heavy (and it was John Ruiz) it became dull as soon as it became obvious how one-sided it was. Only in his last three matches has he really excited me - and those are ones he arguably lost.

I was going to try and build a collection of all his fights, but I don't know if I'll bother now... how many are classics?

Veeery boring and a huge waste of talent in my opnion.

Roy should have gone down as the greatest ever and now he'll go down as a guy who didn't apply himslelf.

I was just watching the Ruiz one (switched off Kelly, got sick of it after two rounds)... I hadn't realised just how "on" Ruiz Jeff Nady was.

Also - Roy trades with Ruiz in the centre of the ring, which I hadn't recalled (first round). Now, we all know what we think of Ruiz, but why didn't Ruiz's right to Roy's temple faze him badly, when Johnson knocked him out with the same shot? Could it be that Roy really is just shot, and would have been able to take it in years gone by? (Rather than always not being able to take it)

Jack, I'm getting your handle now. I always knew you were a geezer, but I reckon you're a bit of a satirist as well...

i loved watching roy jones. he had all the tools but watching him carry a fighter into round 12 upset me sometimes. but once i found out that he has bad hands it didnt bother me as much. roy could have stopped more fighters but didnt want to risk breaking his hand to do it. also one part of his gameplan was to break a fighter down, tire him out and then go for the kill.

Waste of talent? The man was p4p king! How can you say he wasted his talent? It's not that he's boring. He's just above his competition and that one sided beatdown made it look boring. I mean he made Toney and Hopkins look mediocre. I've always been impressed of his skills, speed and refelexes. If you're into 1st round knockouts well he ain't the fighter for you.

The thing is he had great power and incredible handspeed at super-middleweight and yet he still let guys off the hook. He had the prowess of Jack Dempsey but he was about as ferocious as Hector Camacho. I find no enjoyment in seeing a guy get hopelessly outclassed for an entire fight. If you are that much better than you opponent, do him a favor and put him out of his misery. Why prolong the suffering?
