Hopkins-Glenn Johnson rematch

Last time I checked ; Dawson wasn't exactly known for his intense workrate.Wrong. Dawson has a great chance of beating Hopkins. I would favor him
Hopkins does best against plodding fighters who aren't as active (Tito, Pavlik, Tarver) but struggles to win rounds against active fighters who throw a lot of punches (Taylor, Calzaghe). Dawson is not plodding and he throws a lot of combinations. Hopkins would more than likely lose a close UD and complain about the result.
Joe Calzaghe was.
And Hopkins managed to chop his workrate in half when they fought.
If he can do it to Calzaghe, he can do it to Dawson ; a lesser fighter overall, with much less experience, and a much lower output.Comment

But he didn't clearly beat Calzaghe. According to the judges (who I agreed with) he lost. The problem with Bernard sometimes is that against guys who throw a lot of combos, he waits too much and lets rounds slip away. It's not that he can't win those rounds, it's that he doesn't feel the need to stay active and throw punches. Therefore, he believes he's winning rounds when the judges are watching a whirlwind like Calzaghe outwork him and press the issue.Last time I checked ; Dawson wasn't exactly known for his intense workrate.

I'm not saying Dawson is the better fighter or will ever be better than Hopkins, but neither was Taylor. I think Dawson has the right style and is active ENOUGH to give Hopkins trouble and make it a tough fight for Bernard to win on the cards.
I would envision the fight being a lot of Dawson coming forward and throwing combos while Bernard waits for openings. Likely he would find them, but not often enough.
What would Hopkins need to do to win a fight against Dawson in your opinion?Last edited by dans; 07-17-2009, 12:41 PM.Comment

Well we know Dawson doesn't like pressure ; that much we do know. But he didn't clearly beat Calzaghe. According to the judges (who I agreed with) he lost. Johnson gave him fits and he looked deeply disheartened several times during their fight.
Naturally, Hopkins won't fight Dawson like Johnson did.
But I think he would be throwing a lot more than people would be expecting from him fighting a moving target like Dawson.
He'd be landing the right hand at will because Dawson is a bit of a sucker for them at times, and nobody lands the right hand as well as Hopkins does over and over again, except for maybe Marquez.
Of course, Hopkins would tie up Dawson whenever he got the opportunity to smother his shots.
Movement, creating angles, landing the right hand, throwing a little more, and using the clinch.
That's how I think he beats Dawson.
If you remember ; Hopkins didn't clinch Taylor an awful lot in their fights.
He's learned since then that he needs to tie his man up when he's facing a speedy athletic type who throws lots of combos. (See ; Calzaghe.)Comment

Fair enough. Dawson is definitely beatable, but I'm sticking by my opinion.Well we know Dawson doesn't like pressure ; that much we do know.

I'll hit you up for a bet if the fight ever materializes.Comment

Tarver is taller than Dawson, but Dawson has almost 2 inches on Tarver in reach.
Dawson's 6'1" with a 76 and a half inch reach. Hopkins is 6'1" with a 75 inch reach.
Weight wise, Hopkins would be about 180 on fight night. What's Dawson usually come in at on fight night?
Side note ; I also think the left hook would be a key tool for Hopkins against Dawson. Used to follow up the right hand.
In recent years Hopkins has been content to just land the right by itself with no follow up, but against Pavlik he followed it up with the left hook and had great success with it.
I don't think Kelly was anticipating that, and maybe Dawson wouldn't either.
And if the fight goes off, I'll bet you on it for sure.

Not exactly sure what Dawson weighs on fight night. It's definitely more than 180 though. I think I remember him and Tarver coming in around 185 for their rematch.Tarver is taller than Dawson, but Dawson has almost 2 inches on Tarver in reach.

Dawson is smarter than Pavlik and fights a different style. I think you have to look at the Taylor fights for Bernard's blueprint to beating Dawson. If Hopkins throws more and clinches more (as you suggest), he would have a great chance against Dawson. If Hopkins is complacent and throws one at a time, he will lose.Comment
