You have to be extremely fast to get away without using a jab ala RJ and Mayweather, Ortiz isn't, so he needs one. And even Mayweather has to use it once in a while, like when fought the power punching Corrales.

Ortiz is a real good counter puncher with real good combinations, but he needs a jab if he wants to be and stay a top fighter, whether he likes it or not.

Either that or he better find a way to strengthen his beard so he can take the flush shots he's gonna be eating in the firefights he's gonna be in
ortiz could have very well won that fight. the only thing he needed to different, was to put his damn hands up. his jab would have helped, but he doesnt need one to be successful.... and changing trainers wont change that. and on top of that, he has the same stable that vargas had, who did damn well with him.

He could have, but he didn't. Ortiz panicked after that cut and his trainer didn't help, the kid didn't even start out using the jab. If he's not listening to his trainer he needs a voice he does listen to. Btw Roberto Garcia trained Vargas.

Simply put, Danny Garcia is, at best, the third or fourth best trainer in his own family.

That's an excerpt from the Steve Kim article in the OP.
