I applaud Victor Ortiz for quitting.

Let me give you an opposite example to de-bunk your statement... and my example will clearly support my disagreement:

    ACELINO FREITAS.
Look better? nah but he has more heart in that clottey fight than he has had before. People need to realize that sometimes you losing fights because you are fighting better fighters. So when a guy loses 3-4 times it could mean he is fighting the top of the division, while others who i will not name are underfeated because they AVOID the top of their division. Cotto has not had that killer look since before mosley but remember he is trying to fight the top guys and against mosley he fought the top ones out there. He already said he'll give mosley rematch if he beats or loses to pacman. I want instead for him to fight margarito but this time i want someone in his team to check margo's gloves, which was not done in that fight.

He did not sign a contract to be a baseball player, football player, etc.... He signed a contract to be a professional boxer! It is the equal to Albert Pujols going 0-3 with the 3 K's in his first 3 AB's and just deciding not to take his 4th AB because he feels like he can't hit that particular pitcher.

Ortiz was in a winnable fight that tested his mettle. With a little hear and gumption he beats Maidana.

I seriously would be surprised if Ortiz ever fought again.
Damn homey that was a good analogy..

Manny Pacquiao was KOED, came back to win the p4p #1 crown and has it to this day, Hopkins first fight was a loss, Joe Louis was KOED and ruled a bum before he came back to dominate the HW division in a time there was only one belt and everyone was against him naturally. You need to have heart in boxing and Ortiz failed his heart exam.
You are right and maybe it's time for him to hang it up, but only if he feels if he has heart/will to continue. Some said the same about cotto in the fight with margarito, that maybe he does not have the heart/will to keep going but against a guy like clottey(who others avoid) he could've quit and said "no mas" but continued and left it to clottey to take him out and that never happened. I got more respect for that than margarito taking a beating from mosley but 1 hour before that you find out the guy was cheating. Makes you/anyone think ...was that the first time? 3rd time? How does anyone view any of his wins after finding out he chyeated in 1 fight.

There is no evidence, but you wonder was miguel getting hit with punches or bricks?

Great post. Boxing, after all, is a sport, not a battlefield. You can't disparage the integrity of anyone who has the balls to step in the ring against a world class fighter. That's rule #1 of watching boxing.

The vitriol would be justified if Ortiz quit like Tyson did against Kevin McBride and then basically said to the cameras afterward, "I only took this fight because I was broke as hell, needed money, and knew I could take advantage of my fans. I don't care about boxing anymore." But Ortiz gave it everything he had and Maidana simply battered his lights out until he had nothing left. That's boxing. Ortiz will live to fight another day, and when he does, I hope for his own sake that the kid uses a freaking jab...

Another smart reply...wish we had others who look at it that way instead of killing a guy (ortiz) that simply did not have enough to continue. Instead of losing his eye or getting beat up sooo bad that he could not fight another fight, he decided...yes to quit. We'll see if that is the last we'll see of ortiz. Somehow i get the feeling that we'll see more of ortiz than maidana.

I would rather come back and fight properly and healthily another day and win."

I think he gave us a good fight and will surely be back, hopefully better than ever and with the mind set to now make sure he doesn't do what wankers like the majority of this board want him to do.

Get over yourselves you bunch of hypocritical ******. Every single one of you would ****e your pants in a second if faced with the prospect of some guy across the ring who has knocked out every single one of his opponents, and he wants to literally pulverize your face into moosh.

Oh, wait, that's right, you all just sit on your arses and play on your computer typing about a fighter who gives you entertainment as being a ***** for providing you with one of the best fights of the year so far! You ****ing bunch of wanking **** ******s. Damn, I'm sick of hearing pathetic little kids whine about a fighter quitting. How many of you have been smashed in the face over and over by a guy with serious power? None of you! Christ, Id like to take a bat to some of you losers calling him a quitter or a *****. Not a single one of you who call him that would even know what it's like to step into that ring and fight someone desperate to kick your head in. You all disgust me.
Truer words are rarely spoken. It's a great thing not all fighters quit on their stools or there'd be anarchy.

The man put up a good effort and simply came up short.

That's vastly different than a boxer who puts up no effort and decides to call it a day after getting punched only one time.

He was honest enough to speak his truth in front of thousands.

Many others have blamed everything under the sun except themselves for the outcome.

It happened early in his career, and will no doubt be brought up if he decides to continue fighting.

Perhaps, this is his wake up call to re-think, re-organize, and re-structure his future as a fighter and come back stronger.

                    Only time will tell.

While i do agree with what the TS said but Ortiz is only 22 years old and fought 26x. Ali fought 61x and was 39 when he retired.
