I was a huge Roy Jones Jr fan in the mid 90's.I thought he was the next Ray Leonard. But I found myself waiting and waiting for Roy to take on some serious challenges. There were rumors of him fighting Terry Norris, Julian Jackson, and Gerald McClellan at middleweight. Not even one of those fights took place. He said he didn't like the way Nigel Benn celebrated his victory over a fallen and seriously hurt McClellan, but he never challenged him.He didn't beat a Bernard Hopkins in his prime. And when the fight with Hopkins would have meant more and would have been huge, he failed to fight him. After his impressive win over the paper champ, Ruiz, Lennox Lewis called him out.It never happened. James Toney destroyed Holyfield around the same time and that hyped up a potential fight between the two.But once again,Roy found an excuse not to fight him.So maybe in some people's mind Roy is or was this boxing god, but I came to the conclusion that he was no more than a great entertainer in the ring and a smart business man.He is becoming a joke and making a mockery of the sport by fighting these C and D class fighters while still avoiding the elite light heavyweights.Right now he should be calling out the winner of Dawson vs Johnson. But of course that's not going to happen.ROY JONES JR: BOXINGS GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT!!!Comment

I share pretty much the same opinion about Roy Jones. I can't discredit Roy's whole resume, because it has some good fighters on it. Julio Gonzales went on to beat Darius M. And then you have to give him credit for his two fights with Montell Griffin. He faced a lot of adversity in their first fight, and blasted him out in the rematch. That is what put a stamp on his all-time greatness. I think he ruined Griffin in that second fight. I thought he got a gift in the first fight with Tarver, but he still dug deep in the late rounds to preserve the victory the judges already had made their mind up about.I was a huge Roy Jones Jr fan in the mid 90's.I thought he was the next Ray Leonard. But I found myself waiting and waiting for Roy to take on some serious challenges. You also have to give him some credit for his victories over Reggie Johnson and Mike McCallum even though they were somewhat faded at the time he fought them. But other than that, there's too much unfinished business like you said that he left at Middleweight and Suppermiddleweight. 168 was actually a decent division at the time that Collins, Benn, Eubank, and McClellan fought in it. But 175 was pretty weak, so I can't fault that part of his resume. Overall, I think what Donovan's story is alluding to is the fact that Roy Jones is trying to take the cheap way to another title by targeting the worthless IBO at Cruserweight, and intelligent boxing fans see through that bull**** like a picture frame.Last edited by Iceta; 06-23-2009, 10:06 PM.Comment
