There seems to a lot of people on here who are very insecure about the whole MMA thing. You have to remember how bad Mercer did in K1, and then remember that even K1 isn't the whole package. It does look bad for MMA as Sylvia was supposed to be decent, but a fight is a fight and anything can happen.

It's just going insult most people's intelligence to even bring up how well boxers would do in MMA. You know they're only going to have limited success as they're limited fighters.

There is something to take away from this fight however. What Mercer did to Silvia would never happen the other way around. For example, if Fernando Vargas came out of retirement to fight Ken Shamrock in a boxing match, Shamrock would have no chance to win at all. None whatsoever.

Mercer truly put MMA in check. He pulled off the upset they could never dream of.

Put Mercer in the ring with any TOP 25 HW today and he would get owned in two minutes.

Sylvia has zero fighting IQ, and if anyone would loose to a good boxer is him, or Arlovski who is actually world champion in sambo, but for some reason thinks he is a good boxer.

Lesnar, Velasquez, Couture, Dos Santos, Nogueira, Mirko, Carwin, Gonzaga, Overeem... Any one of these would own Mercer in a MMA fight.

In boxing, it would be other way around.

But these are two different sports, you can't pull half of the stuff from boxing in a MMA fight, you can't.

TWO SPORTS - TWO DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES - DIFFERENT SET OF RULES.

        Got it?

Boxers have a punchers chance in MMA, and not even that most of the time. Botha got owned by 30 kg's lighter judoka, Nishijima is 0 - 5 in MMA getting owned by brawlers, Jimmerson got owned by Gracie...

Now go ramble some more about boxers > mma fighters in boxing, genious.

          Thats not a surprise really.

especially when the fool tried to box with a boxer.

Sylvia is awful anyway to be honest.

You're right but that's an unfair comparison because there's no neutral ground with it. Boxing is 1 aspect of MMA with a talentpool of fighters that specialize in other aspects beside boxing. That'd be like asking Roy jones to compete with anderson silva in a jiujitsu match where Roy wouldnt know the 1st thing about it. Absolutely no chance in hell.

I don't understand why people from the boxing world continue to bring up this point? Isn't it common sense that a boxer or ANY athlete from any combat sport could come into a mma fight and win? Considering boxing is a part of MMA why would this even be a point? This would like an Olympic wrestler saying "what Kurt Angle did to Tim Sylvia would never happen the other way around. Meaning Sylvia would have no chance in a official wrestling match"

Why is it that only boxing fans say this? The current UFC champ Lyoto Machida is a Karate master but you don't hear Karate guys saying "Oh I told you! MMA is exposed!"

No mma isn't exposed dummy....mma is all fighting disciplines by definition.

Tim Sylvia is rated at #6 in the divisional rankings of MMAweekly.com.. Mercer fought a legit top ten contender in the heavyweight division.
