They need to just make a boxing network.
HBOs Boxing Budget Is On Empty!

This probably means more ppvs since the government says the Recession will be over by the end of the yearComment

theres been plenty of bad decisions by HBO IMO, even if theyre having great year comparing with the past few years.
HBO Boxing 2009:
1. Berto-Collazo-BAD-Great match up, great fight, in a BAD so it probably didnt suck too much money.
2.Mosley-Margarito-WCB-Margarito made em shell out a bit more than it was originally planned, but it still came up cheap for the succes the event was.
3.Campbell-Funeka, Martinez-Cintron, Angulo-Rivera-BAD-this was originally a great card when mayorga was on it, martinez-cintron on paper was an interesting match up, and HBO attempted to prove they "care" about the sport by giving Campbell a chance...i think they shouldve passed on this when mayorga bailed out honestly, because without him, this seemed like a Showtime card. The fact that Angulo had a showcase, Martinez's showcase was boring and Campbell put a stain on a good fight with the weight issue hurts it even more in retrospect, but it couldnt be helped so i guess HBO gets a pass......
4.Marquez-Diaz, Juarez-John-WCB-No complaints there, **** for buck...
5.Kirkland-Julio, Ortiz-Arnaoutis, Guerrero-Yorgey-BAD-To me this is a bad trend seeing HBO giving prospect dates, the type of fights they give them is more suited for the Sho-box series...so HBO got SHO-box fights for BAD price, huge mistake since BAD budget could probably make some very meaningful lowerweight fights...Guerrero-Yorgey was a weird fight since no one really knows yorgey, it hurts even more looking back at what happened, No oen couldve imagined what Ortiz did to a tested contender like Arnaoutis, and it was an undercard, so this fight is alright.Kirkland-Julio was a mistake, especially as a mian event, since Julio had been proven to be just hype by Quintana, Rivera and Ishe Smith...
6.Wright Williams-WCB-pretty much nothing HBO could do about this since they owed Wright a date and a minimum price range...but adding another prospect sho-box type showcase to the budget with arreola-mccline was a mistake......
7.Lopez-Penalosa, Peterson-Blain-BAD-the main event was actually between proven world class fighters, and probably came cheap enough even with the shobox showcase for peterson, so this one gets a pass......
8.Pacquiao-Hatton-PPV-unofficial numbers point to it being a success, and PPV's are only a burden on HBO if they bomb.....24/7 was necessary and the success of the event surely paid for it in full...
9.Dawson-Tarver2-WCB-on top of it being a crap fight were they allowed 2 desperate fighters to get a huge payday for a meaningless fight that wouldve had problems being made, since Showtime didnt want it, their commentating team crap on HBO's investement during the broadcast.mistake
10.Berto-Urango, Cintron-Angulo-BAD-crap main event match up, another watsed date on a Berto Showcase..........Cintron-Angulo was a good match up and a good fight but illustrates one of my biggest issue with HBO boxing in 09: THEY CHOSE SOME BAD PROSPECTS TO SHOWCASE.
i divided them in groups of how i perceive them
THE WASTE
Angulo-Kirkland-Arreola...................good fighters, but really trying to sell this guys as the "Future of boxing" and reserving dates for them is a mistake, since theyre really not that good, getting overpayed....
THE UGLY
Dawson-Williams......................very good fighters that have no fanbase.a shame really because this guys are really able to be the present of boxing.
THE CONTENDERS
J.Diaz-D.Haye-Berto...............while elite fighters that have big fanbases and entertaining styles, are only a good investement if in meaningful fights, because its no use giving showcases to someone who has a difficult chance to beat the kind of fighters that make you a star, so basically groom them as the opponents for the established stars. They may surprise and really become stars, but be safe just so theres no disappointments
THE FUTURE?
Ortiz-Gamboa.......young, great styles, big fanbase and what appears to be a bright future...dont waste in showcases though, please, because this guys are ready for the big time...if they win, theyre stars, if they dont they fall on the level of the contenders and are opponents for the established stars....
so what im sayin basically is dont waste on showcases if youre not sure the fighter is worth it...Last edited by -Hyperion-; 06-08-2009, 04:50 PM.Comment

Paying 3 million for the Tarver-Dawson rematch was way too much to bring Dawson over to HBO. 2 millie should have sufficed. I didn't know that they paid that much for Williams-Wright **** is absurd at that price half of that or 2/3s should have been enough.
When HBO pays that much they look foolish because they're bidding against themselves, Showtime doesn't pay more than 2 or 3 mil for any fight. They didn't even want to pay 2 mil for Vazquez-Marquez IV.
HBO shouldn't be knocked for guarunteeing Mayweather 15 million, they'll get most to all that money back from that fight and maybe even make a profit. Mayweather probably has to do around 600k to earn that and he will.Comment

If 850K PPV buys (and counting) isn't good enough in these tough times, then I don't know what number of buys will be good enough for you. Hope and pray that the Floyd/JMM fight can draw at least half of that number...Comment

I've heard quite a few people say after that 2.4M fight, "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you".
Never again...Comment

Then, the network shelled out a reported $15 million to lure Floyd Mayweather, Jr. back into the ring in a fight on July 18 that most consider a mismatch against Juan Manuel Marquez. I don't deny the economic value Mayweather brings to the sport, but is it $15 million worth for this one fight, more than the network has paid any fighter this year?
This is not accurate. HBO does not "buy" PPV fights. Sure, they may well have "guaranteed" Golden Boy $15 million in revenue, but HBO would only have to actually cough up money if there aren't enough ppv buys to cover the guarantee. So if the fight only did say $13 million in ppv revenue HBO would pay the additional $2 million.
I am skeptical though that HBO would even "guarantee" that much money.....Comment
