Dawson Vacates IBF Title, Johnson Fight Nears

It was just reported by promoter Gary Shaw that Chad Dawson has sent a letter to the IBF, officially vacating his light heavyweight title. The sanctioning body was leaning on Dawson to defend the title against Tavoris Cloud. [details]

Chad Dawson prefers to fight 40 year olds rather than younger, dangerous opponents like Tavoris Cloud and Adrian Diaconu.

He should have taken care of his mandatory first, then rematched Johnson. There's no reason he can't fight three times in a year.

Dawson is a funny man... isnt that the second belt he vacated now? It would be funny as hell if Johnson comes in pissed cuased they robbed him the first fight and beats Dawson. Chad would be left with no belt and a loss..

Why didnt he just fight Cloud? Was he scared? That would have been a great fight.

Great move....Cloud is a nobody and there is no money in fighting him. Now Chad can beat Johnson again and finally shut his mouth.

Cloud last fought in August....in August? WTF is he waiting for? His managers little plan to strongarm Dawson has backfired.

Lets not change our tune now fellas. Most of you were pressing Dawson to rematch Johnson. It appeared that he was ducking him. He is vacating a paper belt in favor of fighting a legit contender.

He should be applauded. Stop the nonsense, Tarvis Cloud aint going nowhere.

HBO didn't want a Cloud fight and Dawson has a deal with HBO. So the ditching of the belt makes economical sense. It's exactly the same thing that happened when he ditched the belt because he didn't want Adrian Diaconu. Sporting wise it sucks.

Props to the IBF though for sticking up for their rules. Of course they would have lost a ton a credibility if they didn't.

Look at this. First its "Dawson needs to rematch Johnson" and now its "Dawson is ducking Cloud".

None of you critics would fight Cloud either. Not because he's dangerous, its just not a smart career move.

Someone explain this to me in a way that makes sense.

Why fight Cloud in a DEAD division when you can go down to SMW and fight the bigger names there? What BENEFIT is there to fighting Cloud over Froch, Green, Ward, Kessler, Taylor? Its not like these guys are push overs.

Elaborate. Explain how that is a better career move.

I know what you mean... but IF he gets by johnson then what? Fight for another Title agian? It would be a back n forth scenario..175 is dry he wont ever be a big star in that division.

                    I'll have a go:

It's better for him to stay at 175 instead of draining himself going down a division. If he keeps on beating the opposition at 175 he'll prove himself at being the man to beat at LHW. Eventually some of the big guns will move up and they'll be looking for the top dog of the LHW's. I wouldn't bet on it being anyone but Dawson. So staying will make long term sense.
