The boxing world has been treated to some great fights from the pound for pound kings in recent years.
Manny Pacquiao is the current king, but one has to wonder if he is being helped by some factors too.
One thing is that Pacquiao has vacated the 135 lb. division and settled at 140, where he has dethroned the 140-lb. Ricky Hatton in spectacular fashion, and credit to him for that.
The only thing that may bother a boxing fan is that his team, which includes Bob Arum and trainer Freddie Roach, seems to want to protect their most prized asset and milk him dry for all the dollars they can get from him.
One smart thing they are doing is keeping Pacquiao at 140, where there's nobody worth fighting after beating Hatton. Staying at this division keeps him at arm's length from the 147 superstars; anyone below that will have to step up to fight Pacquiao.
The best boxer in the world will require another good challenger to starve and shrink himself to fight him! Now that is what I call FRAUD.
Why? Because Pacquiao has fought and won at the 147 division before (with a drained fighter).
Roach and Arum must have noticed the magic in getting fighters to drain themselves before they face Pacquiao after the Oscar De La Hoya fight. Now they are demanding that Shane Mosley should get down to 142 lbs. and Miguel Cotto to 140 lbs. to fight Pacquiao.
Now this is ridiculous!
One thing I will always credit Floyd Mayweather Jr. for is that whenever he was challenging a good boxer, he never tried to trick that guy into a catch weight scenario to give himself an advantage over him.
Roach has been reluctant to make Pacquiao face Mayweather after Mayweather is done with Juan Manuel Marquez because he knows that Mayweather took a good choice for his return to the ring.
You see, Mayweather knows that fighting Pacquiao would mean dropping some weight to a catch weight. If he had come and faced a 147-lb. boxer, he would have fought it a different experience fighting at 143 or 142, as the Pacquiao camp would dictate.
Roach got all worked up after Mayweather announced that he will fight Marquez because that in itself is a declaration by Mayweather that he is willing to fight Pacquiao at a catch weight.
So now, Roach and Arum are planning to fight someone else who does not pose a serious threat. They say that they want someone who comes forward, because most of those who come forward always leave their chins to be hit, like Hatton.
It will not be easy to see a Pacquiao-Marquez III bout, or Mayweather-Pacquiao, or Joshua Clottey-Pacquiao. Arum is busy organizing to face Cotto, but everybody knows that Clottey is a tough fight for him and Clottey could win. The only thing is that Roach and Arum DO NOT mention Clottey's name because the guy's defense is probably second to Mayweather's in the 147 division.
Here's the one thing I would tell the Pacquiao camp: Keep your man at 140 and fight 140-lb. fighters; if you want to fight 147-lb. fighters, then step up in weight and challenge them.
The issue of catch weights is a FRAUD!
