David Haye vs Carl Thompson

Agree with the sane posters defending Haye. Thompson was an exceptionally tough fighter and worthy belt-holder. Haye deserves a lot of credit for taking such a difficult fight very early in his career (and even more credit for continuing with this high-risk strategy ever since), but it was a mistake. If you were looking for someone to blow away early and look good doing so Thompson was entirely the wrong kind of fighter. At times his punch resistance seemed off the scale. I lost count of the number of times he was knocked from pillar-to-post in back-to-back rounds and went on to win. As mentioned, the crazy fights against Eubank should be in everyone's home collection.
Haye should have exercised a bit more patience. He could have put Thompson away early had he not thrown those energy-sapping air-conditioners.
As for Haye's chin: getting knocked-down means very little next to STAYING DOWN. Anyone can hit the canvas. Anyone. All it takes is for you to be off balance when your opponent catches you with a sweet shot and **** - you're horizontal. Yes, Haye's been down a couple of times, but he's never looked anything worse than momentarily stunned. I can't believe the number of loons in here who use the Barrett "knockdown" as a stick to beat Haye with. Even if it was a KD (which I'm not entirely certain of) Haye was so far from ***** Street he'd have needed a Saturn V rocket to get there.
Regarding Calzaghe, his chin was stainless steel - trust me. He was stunned only twice in his career - against Mitchell (who caught him with a perfect shot) and Jones (or was it Hopkins - I'm always getting the two KDs confused?). Within twenty seconds of both he was on his feet looking like a fighter coming out for the first. Both Kessler and Lacy caught him with massive shots (those Kessler uppercuts are about as hard as things get at SMW) and he took them with barely more than a flinch. Any fighter turning pro today would sell a testicle to have a chin like Joe's.Comment
