I once made a joke about it on these boards. Forget how it actually went but it went something like this:
Calzaghe was the type of guy that hid in Wales while the World was at War and after the sound of the guns and the bombs stopped and the War was over...Joe comes running out of his cave and starts throwing grenades and shooting his gun.
Now obviously that is an exaggeration and a bit disrespectful given he is a Pro figher and has some good wins like his wins over Lacey and Kessler, but there was a point to be made to his nuthugging fans about his win over Roy and Hopkins since there were some that were acting like Roy and Hopkins were in their prime if not far removed from it.
I've always said that it was more Hopkins fault than Joe's for how long it took to get a fight made. And for Hopkins being past his best by that time it was made was his fault (even though I laid out reasons why it took so long); but with Roy and Joe, it was more Joe by far.Comment

One thing about Joe is that I do think he was a very good fighter but he failed in my opinion to show us how good he truly was unless that was it. In a way, somewhat what we wonder about a Prime Roy Jones Jr. but I think Roy was better and a true top talent that is very rare.
Now if he would have had someone to teach him properly from a young age to perfect certain fundamentals (like say Floyd had with his Father and Uncle)....that would have been crazy.
A good matchup would have been the two of them at their best which never happened.Comment

If Joe was as good as some people THINK he is, then why does his record not back that up? if his record DOES back it up then why do people have to stoop to discrediting Jones and Hopkins resume to make Joe's look better ?
It must be weak and they must know its weak, otherwise their insecurity's would not provoke this sort of thing.
Hopkins and Jones are rated better than Joe for a CLEAR and valid reason, they fought/beat better opposition. If they are rated higher, then what makes you think a lesser fighter could go through their resume unbeaten when THEY could not stay unbeaten, and they are rated better by the MAJORITY of Boxing fans.Comment
