By chasing him do you mean refusing to come to the US? Because that's what happened and that link you have is nothing but sympathetic propaganda. Action speaks louder then words.
No it's not at all, The only guy that was any good was eubank and he was past it. He's the only guy Calslappy fought at the weight who ever beat anybody. And the difference is Hopkins was the undisputed champ or considered the best in the division for the whole length of his reign. He actually beat the other belt holders instead of just imagining he could. Calzaghe was just another trinket holder who never even tried to unify the title until his 18th defense. He was hiding behind the most pathetic title in boxing for a decade.
this is one of if not the main problem i have with joe. im not a nuthugger im a fan, hes my favourite fighter but i can still see the flaws in him. when he reminsices about not having fought the big names earlier part of me does recognize that calzaghe is to blame.
the links i posted are to show you that calzaghe tried to make the fights happen, im not saying the american names were completely to blame, calzaghe should have been willing to travel earlier. but you have to recognize that it is harder for euro fighters, and there does seem to be double standard for euro fighters.
what i do think you're conveniently forgetting is what hopkins did in 2002. that was in my eyes a blatant duck, asking for double the money is a sign of a fighter who doesn't want the fight to happen puts in an unreasonable request and avoids the fight.
besides why should calzaghe have to go and face a US fighter in the US, why dont the US fighter travel more often. the cardiff stadium pulled in more people than the majority of if not all of the US venues.
as for calzaghe not unifying, there a few reasons. sven ottke was probably the main one, i think any criticsm here for joe not making the fight is slightly harsh.
calzaghe actually fought alot of fighters who were either ex-champs or champs. timing of the fights was always an issue for him and the belts always seemed to evade him until they rested with kessler. take the WBC belt for instance it went to malinga, then woodhall, then beyer. the WBA went from mitchell, to siaca, mundine and again it was only until kessler got it that the title stopped swtiching hands. through this period the one title that didn't go anywhere was the WBO.
i know that it took a long time for calzaghe to actually get his hands on all the belts but there is no doubt that he cleaned out the division and fought everyone worth fighting, he took care of everyone in the top 10. to say that the only fighter he fought worth mentioning is eubank is slightly OTT - sheika had just beat johnson, kess had 4/5 wins over top 10 comp. lacy was the messiah according to some people, mitchell had held the WBA title and lost it to ottke, brwer was ranked in the top 10 had held the IBF (i think) and again had only just lost to ottke.Last edited by hookoutofhell; 05-16-2009, 02:05 PM.Comment

go back to one my earlier posts - this is the issue that i said i had with calzaghe he didn't make the big fights soon enough its only when he was approaching the end of his career that he though **** i gotta make this fight happen, and he made the sacrifices.

the thread is about zaghe and hopkins and comparing them and their accomplishments, in the same way that JC wanted the crown ***els so did hopkins, you know that double standard i was talking about....
also zaghe isn't ****** man, a loss to RJJ and he would have lost his chance in the US market, any fighter making his debut in the US wants a fight which he can establish himself with, making your US debut against a prime RJJ is career suicide.Last edited by hookoutofhell; 05-16-2009, 02:17 PM.Comment

actually mate we're talking about zaghe and hopkins and thier careers.
but yeah you wanna talk calzaghe that fine, like i said making your US debut against a prime RJJ in a new weight class is career suicide.Comment

Why is it suicide? Joe could have beaten him right?
I dont know how long you've been around here but back in the day Hopkins always caught a lot of **** for how he tried to renegotiate that rematch.
Even back in the day the general consensus was that Hopkins was causing the hold up since Roy won the first fight.
So much for the double standard.Comment

for hopkins if he loses to RJJ it might not matter so much - maybe RJ just has his number. if zaghe loses to RJJ then he becomes another bum from europe. thats where the double standard comes in
anyway we're digressing.Comment
