When fighters jump up in weight..

To get a big fight and not because they are having trouble making the said weight, why do they put on the weight if they think it will hurt their speed? I see people saying that Marquez will not be as fast at 144 or whatever ****in goofy weight they are having the fight at. I don't disagree with that statement but if he really thinks it will hurt him, why not just weigh in at 135-140 then? Same with Hatton when he fought Floyd. If he was so much better at 140, why did he not come in at 140 for the weigh in? Fuck the 7 pounds.

If the added weight will not help you, why bother gaining it if you honestly think you would fight better 5-10 pounds lighter? Is there a rule against this that I have overlooked?

Great point! I've said this also, it isn't like he was ever gonna be able to hurt Floyd. Might as well come in at a weight where Marquez could move fast

it is something i've thought of before

maybe they don't see the speed advantage as substantial enough to outweigh the power they would be sacrificing

            remember Zab v Clottey?

I'm not taking shots at Marquez or anything. I just wonder why fighters pack on weight if they really think it will hinder their performance. Like most, I would prefer the fight between Floyd and Juan at 140 but it ain't gonna happen. So I think Marquez should just come in at 140 if he is going to suffer from gaining all that weight.

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at.

That's not the point I'm trying to make.. I never said he would be faster than Floyd (that's up for debate) but Marquez himself might be faster at 135 than he would weighing in at 145. Agree? So unless Marquez wants to add a lot of power so that he can hurt Floyd, he should not weigh in at the maximum weight. Given Floyd's defensive skills, I don't think Marquez plodding around with added bulk trying to KO him is his best option for a win.

a lot of boxers make the mistake of putting on more muscle (i.e. shane) which hurts their speed.

pacquiao did it the good way. notice how his ring weight is about the same his last 4 fights even though he jumped from 130-135 and 147-140?

all he did was cut less the higher he moved up which helped him as well.

henry armstrong never bothered to put on weight either. when he challenged for the 160 belt against cerefino garcia (another great pinoy fighter. ) he barely weighed over 140.

                    LOL

                    that is NOT his point

larry, my man - the world doesnt revolve around floyd. abos is just talking about weight, he's not specifically tryin to take shots at the floyd/jmm fight.

                    thanks.
