Twilight or not - it was the first and only time Eubank was beaten by a fighter who had no big fight experience. That's a hell of an achievement in my book. And Calzaghe still regards it as his toughest ever fight.



I just have done. IMO, sub-prime Eubank and prime Reid would have posed far more difficulties to Johnson than Tarver (who in his current state shouldn't be granted a licence and Johnson, who remains competent - but his best days are long gone). I calls it as I sees it.

I find it difficult to believe that a faded Chris Eubank would be considered a better win than a prime Tomasz Adamek. A prime Reid definitely wouldn't.

But getting back to Eubank...your first line sums up my point. Most faded fighters get beat by up and coming ones. That's just the way it goes; out with the old and in with the new. Dawson's win over Adamek (whose stock keeps rising) is quite underrated. Victories over Johnson and Tarver or near or on par with Eubank and Reid.

Chad wasn't impresssive enough for the public to DEMAND those fights (Calz/B-Hop)......dont get me wrong......I would LOVE to see those fights but Chad needs to get back in with Glen Johnson

They're only bigger names if you genuinely believe the US market holds alll the best fighters in the world. The fact of the matter is SMW (along with a number of other weights) has been dominated by non-US based fighters for years. If you don't choose to pay attention Joe can't be held responsible.

Let's enter the world of realism here. Calzaghe fought Manfredo to open up the US market. He'd reached the end of the road fighting the best fighters in the SMW division and fancied earning a nice pension before he retired.



Nonsense. Calzaghe beat one of the best fighters in the history of the SMW division - Eubank - in his first ten years. Yes, he was past his prime - but it remains a bigger achievement than anything Dawson's delivered so far. And a prime Reid > shot Tarver/Adamek/Johnson.

Joe ran a weak SMW division for 10 years in his back yard, then fought Lacy and Kessler (who have done what since????). Topped it off with an ugly arguable SD unimpressive "win" over HOP and then a fight with a Roy Jones of 2008 in the States that should have happened 10-12 years prior.

Dawson as of now by beating Adamek (who is the CW champion of the world. You do KNOW that right?) and old vets like Johnson and Tarver are better or even with most anything Calzaghe has ever done other than run a weak division for 10 years (Dawson hasn't been in that long).

Don't get me wrong Dawson is no great. He's solid. Point is he deserves a BIG fight at LHW. He IS the man to beat. He's undefeated. You should know first hand as Joe Calzaghe's logic has it, If your undefeated "your the best" no matter who you have fought.......

Chad has everything to ask for. He's young, has a belt and he's undefeated but with flaws. Why wouldn't someone that "thinks" there the best want to face "THE MAN" to beat?

Eubank certainly was faded but - more important - he took the bout on short notice and struggled to make weight. Furthermore, while his two performances against Thompson are commendable (he was far fresher in those two bouts), it was the same Carl Thompson who was stopped by Ralf Rochigianni. In other words...ehh...

My uncle was a huge fan of Eubank in the mid-90's. Personally, I couldn't stand him. But I always respected him. However, it's strange to me how so many who barely saw him in his prime seem to think he was some great or near ATG. No. Chris Eubank was a pretty good fighter in his prime. That's it.

This seems like the best post but most people will agree, Dawson is no great but so isn't Calzaghe. I think Chad is a B+ fighter in a C division, Calzaghe was for 10 years able to match it up with the big dogs and didn't. Who's fault is it? I don't want to go that way, the fact of the matter is he would prolly lose those fights considering the 40 year old versions of those great champions were still able to drop Zaghe in the first round. If you get dropped on the first round and you don't get finished, there's something wrong with your opponent, it has absolutely nothing to do with your heart. Ask Ricky Hatton and many others who fought prime great fighters and were dropped in the first round.
