Ricky Hatton vs Junior Witter - Has The Time Come?
Collapse
-
The Hatton that fought Malignaggi/Pac gets stopped by Witter.
Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter have had bad blood for close to a decade. They both turned professional on the same year, in 1997, and were very closely matched, regarded by many as the top 2 fighters in the junior welterweight division at one stage in their careers. Suffering 2 defeats each on their records and both man currently standing without a belt of his own, is it time to put the rivalry to rest once and for all and make this fight happen before the inevitability of retirement rears its ugly head?
But I'm not sure how much this fight means anymore, besides bad blood, score to settle, whatever, and I don't think Hatton will fight him based on that.
That baggage is all the more reason for him to not fight Witter, if you ask me. If Hatton is KO'd by Witter, it's the worst possible finish imaginable to his career. Ricky was knocked out by 2 different P4P #1 guys. It's a bit different from being KO'd by a relatively undecorated guy with whom you have some bitter history, who you were speculated to have swerved and who's been saying he'd "destroy" you for years - Hatton's legacy as the era's British 140lb King would take a devastating hit.
If Ricky fights on, I can't see him fighting Witter. The time for this one is probably long gone. Could be wrong, though.
Were it not that a Witter-Hatton fight would give Junior his career best payday, I think I'd rather see him forge ahead, pick up the WBC and then try to cement a humble but respectable legacy of his own in the twilight of his career than KO Hatton's ghost, anyway. But he deserves that big payday, so I'd support this fight.
Witter's got to beat Alexander first. That's a fight I want to see confirmed.Comment

I was just thinking about "big" fights H atton could still make, and this was one of the ones I came up with. Not big because of either mans stature, as Witter's status has never been that of a superstar, and Hatton, being totally inept against Pacquiao, but more big because of the backstroy behind the fight.
The excuse has always been that the Hatton's didn't want to "pay" (in the sense of giving him a decent money fight) Witter for his disrespect all these years. They basically used the line that Witter needed them and they didn't need him. Well now Hatton needs the fight just as much as Witter does.Comment

He is not a bum he has beat some reasonable fighters in his time, If Hatton continues he should fight Witter as long as Witter gets his title back, but i think Hatton should probably retire now.Comment
