No he wasn't rated #1 at any point in his career, but he was grossly underrated in the late 90's. The Ring Magazine had him an underrated bantam and the dream match was Peñalosa-Johnny Tapia.

Gerry didn't have much of an opportunity back then. Asian fighters didn't have as much exposure.

it could be a great rivalry capped off with cotto versus pacman...gerry took punishment that most men wouldnt take. Much respect for taking the blows and still having the heart to fight. He was still scaring me with the way he would throwq one or two haymakers on the inside but thats what impressed me about jaunma...he stuck with the gameplan, never got frustarated and did what most felt he couldnt do...id love to see lopez and vazquez
